Well. This sucks. Right now I'm on my moms iMac (a grape 333mhz (now ALUMINUM, my OLD chip.. the really hot stinky one) with 32 megs RAM).

Backround info: Wanted to swap daughtercards so I can have the copper chip (which is a lot SMALLER than the aluminum one oddly enough.. its like HALF the size)

Well, here's what happened. I opened up both iMacs, gutted them, and then took off both motherboards. You need to unscrew the motherboards so you are able to pry off the daughtercard. Anyway, I was using a tiny screwdriver pry them off, and it slipped... I didnt notice, and I swapped daughtercards without a hitch. Reassembled, booted up my moms computer (works fine) and hit power on mine. Nothing. F*CK! Whats wrong with it?!?!

Well, i took it apart again.... looked around... turns out when my screwdriver slipped it smushed two traces of the daughtercard connector.. ON the daughtercard. I dont know if anyone knows what I'm talking about or not. There are two plastic white yellowy thing that connect the daughtercard to the motherboard and they have a bunch of VERY tiny little metal traces going from them. A few got smushed. I tried to repair them with my swiss army knife (by bending them apart so they aren't smushed) but so far it hasnt worked.

I will continue to try to fix this until I can take it in for service at a computer shop, and let them fix it. Since Im taking it in though, I might as well have them overclock it.. so.. its not that bad of a deal. Those resistors are just too damn tiny for me to solder. blech. Anyway, just letting you know, when removing your daughtecard BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. I've done this like 8 times before, and i thought it was no big deal and screwed it up. Argh.

But.. all in all I'm not that upset. I mean, I have THIS iMac to use until mine gets fixed... and I'm thinking of it this way. If its too gimpy, I can always get that 500 mhz upgrade right?

Ahhh... what some people will do for a 5% speed increase.

Bummer man, I feel your pain.

No, the copper G3s are easier to OC because they run cooler. So I wanted the copper so I could have a 400-466mhz G3, not a 333. Dig?

I suppose you let your mom have her working computer, at least until the screwed-up one gets fixed.

Won't she notice the speed decrease? E.g. when she is playing UT?

No, she wont notice any speed decrease. They are both 333 chips, only one is copper (easier to overclock)... so I wanted the copper one.

And yes, Franken iMac is dead right now. The daughtercard is getting fixed (hopefully) by some tech dudes.. Im going to have them overclock it too...

I knew it was going to happen to you some day, Ca$h.

No matter how fast you get your iMac to go, you're not going to get a 100-megahertz bus nor the UMA features.

Your Franken-iMac is cool, but you should really consider moving up to a Yosemite, Yikes!, or Sawtooth. If they're too expensive, you can get them second-hand. They're fairly portable, just as long as you have a monitor wherever you go. With that machine, you can use the Voodoo5 chips and the new SoundBlaster Live! cards that should be unveiled at Macworld.

The reason copper G3s are easier to overclock is because the revision 3.x G3 CPU has a 10x multiplier, not 7x, and the bus speed is higher. Hell, even if they kept a 7x multiplier, the 100MHz bus speed still lets them be OC'd to 700MHz (I'd doubt they'd be stable at that point though). However, with the 10x multiplier, copper G3 CPUs are OCable to 1GHz, but you'd have little chance of it being stable.

Huh? Im talking about the copper G3 on an iMac daughtercard. Not a B&W G3 tower. And no way, I like my iMac. Its small, its cool, and its green. Only thing I want on it is a PCI slot with a voodoo5 pass thru card. Hrm. Dang.

PS: I have more mods coming. Heh.

Maybe we should start a Ca$h fund to raise money for a new system for him.
I dunno, thing that gets me is you are doing all this cool stuff on your iMac but it's never going to be quite what you want. As seanyepez said, STEP UP a notch. get a system that you can really do something with. I know the iMac is cool being all in one etc etc but there isn't enough options for upgrading and modifying it. A Powermac is different, you can get into it! Despite this, I think we owe a lot to Ca$h for bringing half of these iMac hacks to fruition.

Bah. Disbelievers.

I'll quit tinkering with my iMac when I run out of ideas. Until then, I dig my iMac, and I definatly have a ways to go. I dont have that 500mhz upgrade, and I dont have the RAM full, and I dont have my 40 gig yet either (only 12)... besides, maybe I can do something to that gamewizard card someday. Who knows.

Anyway, here's what I dont like about G3 B&W towers:

* They're ugly gay blue
* They have to have a monitor seperatly
* They're big
* That stupid CD drive door
* Its somewhat normal.
* They dont buckle into my passenger seat
* My super hack wont work on them. Be prepared to be envious mortals! MU-hAHhaHA!

People sez I'z is different. uh huh huh huh. ;D They's was just jealous THEY didnt get to ride the short bus.
