My powerbook 170 was my first Mac, started my conversion from windoze to Macintosh... but now that I've got my iMac DV, the old 170 isn't used anymore. None of the local used dealers want it and I would hate to throw it out... but i'm not above messing with it, turning it into a project.

It is fully functioning, and I've already upgraded it as much as I could. It's got a 280mb hd, 8mb ram, and 14.4k internal modem.

Thanks!

I gave my PowerBook 165 to my 8 year old nephew as a first computer. That was a year ago, and it's still working. I'm not sure if that's a testament to him or the mac.

Anyway, surely you can find someone that can put that fine machine to use as a word processor, web browser.

I tried giving it to my sister, but she has been brainwashed by windoze.

I've found some clock-chipping info on it, so it's over on the workbench now waiting to be opened up again, to see if I can get it to run at 33MHz.

Does anyone know if I can get it onto an ethernet network? I've seen those localtalk/ethernet adaptors, such as for using a localtalk laser printer with an iMac, might that be the ticket?

hey steph, check on ebay for a scsi to ethernet adapter. one end has a powerbook scsi connector, and the other end, a rj-45 ethernet plug. that's what you're looking for.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found an ethernet adapter on ebay, that fits right into the HDI30 plug.

Now I'm starting to get some ideas for the old machine....
