Well i figured it would be safe to go to at least 400 MHz because of the iMac DV and iMac DV Se models. So you think i could go up to 450 MHz? Last but not least I told you I was new at this whole computer thing can you please lighten up????

Hey Cal422, by all means take no offense by anything anyone here says to you. We all just post to eachother in good fun although some of us can BE REALLY RUDE!!!!.....at times....you guys know who you are .
For the most part we help eachother out whenever possible. Yes we can act like a disfunctional family at times I agree
As far as the 450Mhz clock speed....I've never tried it before so unfortunately I can't help you on this one but I'm sure someone will post a solution for you soon.
-Cheers!!

There is no difference between a 350 G3 and a 450 G3 chip, other than the 450 passed the bin sorting test for that speed. It's not really whether or not clocking it to 450 will kill the chip (it wont) but rather the heat that is generated. Since the new iMacs don't have fans, this can be a real problem. But don't worry about killing the chip outright. If for some reason you have a chip that won't run at 450, the machine simply won't boot. I tried setting my B&W G3 to 700 and it didn't boot. 600 booted and was unstable. But 500 works fine, so 450 certainly is possible.
My guess is that it's not such a big deal. The difference in heat off a 400MHz chip and a 450MHz chip is minimal. And certainly Apple would have figured in future speed bumps and the extra heat that would be generated. If anything, the extra heat could be a *good* thing in a convection cooling system, as it would help speed airflow.
So give it a try, but keep a close watch for awhile on the CPU temperatures (use newers GaugePro or something similar) and see just how much higher they get from where they are now before you overclock.

Before you ask, theoretical max temperature (according to Motorola) is 180F, but I'd maybe start to worry at around 155F-165F.

Hey Cal, this is my advice. Ok, I am NOT trying to be rude, so dont get mad or anything, but right now you dont really know anything. Like.... at all... so here's what I would do if I were in your situation. Just chill iwth the iMac for now, and read everythign you can... this board, the iMac board, the whole page. Read read read. You'll get smarter. BTW: Overclocking an iMac involves soldering, which is not very fun.
