I've just read the IEEE Spectrum last night and found something interesting for those who would like to see Apple ditching Motorola or even the whole Power PC CPU.
From http://www.transmeta.com/crusoe/technology.html
Transmeta's Code Morphing technology is obviously not limited to x86 implementations. As such, it has the potential to revolutionize the way microprocessors are designed in the future.
What do you guys and girls think of this new chip company.

There were rumors flying around a long time ago about Apple possibly contacting Transmeta for processors. Supposedly, it is not very difficult to have a PowerPC morphing unit on the Crusoe.

Well, I guess that the Crusoe running PowerPC code is just a rumor right now (right?). Though, that Crusoe demonstration running x86 at the same speed but at just 1 W really turned my guts upside down!!!

It's not a performance wise chip though, it was meant to be for small appliances and laptops, a 600Mhz Crusoe can barely match the speed of a 450Mhz Celeron.

I think this is a very viable possibility for an ultrathin business notebook or tablet from Apple.

Transmetta is going IPO...but that's beside the point.
The chip was created to consume very little power while still offer "descent" performance. If the G3s go to .13 (IBM made of course, since Moto doesn't have the technology to do so), their power consumption will probably be around 4w or less. It might seem like 300% difference is a great deal, but considering how much power rest of the computer draws (LCD, HD, etc), its not that essential to go transmetta when the PPC can eaily outperform it.
spiffyGuyC is right nonetheless, and it'd be interesting if Apple decide to use it for the laptop of the 6th grid...but I doubt it.

G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...
