After loading QuickTime Player 4, RealPlayer 7, and Shockwave 8, the Xclaim Video Player (XVP)will not open. I get a message saying that no ATI video hardware can be found. I have not made any hardware changes since the last time XVP was working, only the software additions mentioned.

I have written to ATI, and their automated response indicates a one week delay before a real person reads my message. Does anyone here have experience with the same problem?

The only thing I can think of is to reinstall the video card's drivers.

Oops! I should have mentioned what I tried to do. First, I deleted the XVP Prefs and restarted. Second, I reinstalled *all* XVR software (which includes the drivers). Third, I deactivated the new QuickTime extensions. Well, one and two did not change anything. Of course, three made things worse, as XVP needs QT to run. I have yet to take the step of removing the new software mentioned, and reinstalling QT 3, but that is probably next on the agenda.

I got the card back by taking the "drastic" step of removing the new software, and reinstalling QT 3. Voila! The XVP found the ATI hardware! I first removed RealPlayer, no effect. But when I replaced QT 4 with QT 3, it worked. I'm hoping ATI will tell me where to get a patch to run 4 with XVR.

I still have another problem that appeared at the same time. And I removed the third and final new piece of software (Shockwave) to see if it would fix it. It didn't. The problem is that I cannot see the finder in the background (icons on the desktop, etc.) when an application is open. I either have to go to the finder pulldown menu, or use the shareware utility QuikHide to "toggle" back and forth. I replaced QuikHide, but that did not make this annoying problem go away. I also tried trashing the Finder Prefs, but that had no effect either.

Anyone have an idea on that? (Maybe I should start a new thread.) I should mention that I am running the ancient OS 8.1

does anyone know if there is a definite conflict with Quicktime and acclaim VR? i've had QT 4.x since it came out, and i just installed an acclaim VR card. the apple system profiler recognizes the card but when i tried to run avid cinema, it says i need the avid cinema card installed (which i do) i dunno, maybe this is a totally different card and problem. i have both acclaim and avid cinema cards in, avid cinema wont recognize its card. anyone know why?

I've had two other people report problems on another board where I posted the same original information. It seems that it is a conflict between XVR and QT 4. I have yet to hear from ATI, and that could be another week.

I saw an article and patch a while back on the Apple TIL page about ATi Xclaim VR cards and pre-G3 PCI macs. I can't remember the details but it was something about these PCI cards sometimes not working properly and there was a fix there! I'll see what I can find.
