CPU upgrades & OS X

We all know how much Apple loves people monkeying around inside the coloured plastic, so:
Do you think that OS X will break any CPU upgrades? Should one wait until the PB of OS X? Is this just crazy talk? Will OS X still install okay on an upgraded B&W G3?

Although I don't know the answer for sure, I wouldn't worry. Upgrade manufacturers have always found ways around Apple's setbacks. Look at the iMac upgrades. I'm sure someone else could give you a more definate answer, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Quite a few upgrade makers already claim their cards are OS X compliant I think. Just check their sites and search about it. I think I saw Sonnet upgrades were and at least one other brand.....

I've *installed* the DP4 on an upgraded machine. Works fine, although probably not the same speed as the latest bus speed and speed of memory in the newer macs.
It does work and it will work in the final, it may just be "unsupported". When it warns that you can't install on the such-and-such machine, you just go to the menu and there is an option in one menu to select overriding the install option on unsupported hardware. NO PROBLEMS with the standard machine.
Don't expect any custom SCSI or video cards to be supported though.

Just curious. What logic would make you think that it would "BREAK" a cpu upgrade? Or even not work?
I mean, a processor just calculates numbers from instructions.... if OSX works on the new macs, why the heck would it not work on an older one?
Sorry, I see no logic in even questioning this idea.

You don't like Macs? Good, more for me.

Cash, you are a nuisance Certainly you have a lot of empirical knowledge about Macs but it is obvious you know little about computer engineering.
I am holding off from buying the G4 upgrade for iMacs because IT IS POSSIBLE that Apple had ordered the engineers to disable any processors cards from Newer factories. How it can be done? The bootROM, firmware and flashROM in New World Macs is ultimately owned and controlled by Apple. OSX could certainly disable 1st gen iMacs with G4 chips. Only evil is needed, and Jobs has it.
I will wait until September 13 to see how things happen. I won't be surprised at any of the two possible outcomes.
Just remember:
Pikachu
Barney the Dinosaur
The Teletubbies
Bill Gates
Steve Jobs
are of the same kind.

The newer brand 466 uses the apple original bootrom, so there would be no problems there.
The iForce from powerlogix doesnt even have a bootrom, it copies the one you currently have somehow.
The Newer G4 is the only one that might have a non apple bootrom, but HIGHLY HIGHLY FReAKING UNLIKELY considering Newere would get their ASSES sued off if they somehow copied apple's bootrom and sold it like that. So it probably uses the Apple Bootrom, considering that the daughtercards look IDENTICAL to their 466 G3 cards, so its obviously just a rechipped Apple card.

cash,
i think godfather is referring to the 'blue blocker' episode of about a year ago. a firmware update for the b&w g3 had the charming side-effect of preventing machines upgraded to g4 from booting. the next firmware update undid the block, but it did exist for a while.
conciveibly (sp?), apple could do such a thing again with osx. apparently osx does not require specific toolbox calls on the bootrom, so an 'aquablocker' firmware update isn't possible, but i'm sure they could figure something out if they really wanted to.
but i tend to doubt that they will. x MUST be a big hit. period. it won't be if they block the very power users they're catering to with the beta, and it won't be if there's a scandal.
just my US$0.02 (£0.0139 or €0.0229, for those in europe (see, i've been reading the 'protest' forum :-) ))

yeah, I know about that, but here's the thing. Those were upgraded CHIPS. iMacs use daughtercards, and since the aftermarket companies cant steal or modify apples boot ROM, then it has to be EXACTLY copied from the existing one, or its the same daughtercard in the first place. Either way, you have a 100% legit and original Apple Bootrom, and in now way does this bootrom tell the OS that it isnt an apple "stock" chip. See what I mean?
