I wonder if there's a catch. The info at Small Dog says it's BTO. At the price the're asking, you might have to send in your daughtercard for them to modify.

No, its a completely new daughtercard... designed BY powerlogix, so it'll be pretty shwank. Nifty installation too. Read about it at www.xlr8yourmac.com

I want this thing REAL bad, even if only for a day.... I wonder what UT would be like? Wow.

If they can manufature CPU daughtercards, then they surely are capable of designing G4 upgrades.

I am not going to ask you "Don't you think so?" 'cause I am positive they can.

Hard choice.

Newer: daughtercard of unknown origin, but you can forego the rebate to be safe.

Powerlogix: Who knows what kind of problems might crop up. On the other hand, we may see a 600 MHz iMac by the end of the year.

This is real breakthrough by PowerLogix. They didn't just replace the CPU, but designed a whole system board.
Lets recall that Apple soldered two of the most expensive parts of the iMac (G3, cache and proprietary Boot-ROM) on this board, and crossed fingers for no one to be so crazy as to develop the whole thing from scratch... Two years since then; G3s and cache dropped prices and PowerLogix collected enough experience on the iMac so to write a new Boot-ROM. Take that Apple, now we users have a second choice you tried (and are still trying) to take from us

I am also confident that PowerLogix Boot-ROM will be higher quality than Apple's.

Wouldn't it be sweet if PowerLogix sold their info to Be Inc. and they finally get the BeOS on the iMac. PowerLogix would sell its upgrades with a "BeOS Compatible" logo.

The Boot ROM is the exact same as Apple's. If you read the article on it at www.xlr8yourmac.com, basically you copy the Boot ROM to your HD somehow, and then switch cards.... I dont really understand, but basically it is copying the thing... so no different.

This is so cool, and you don't have to worry about any conficts with your rom and mezz slot, because it is the original rom. Well I am definitly saving my pennies for this one.

dammit. I wish they had these in stores. Me being the immoral person I am, and posessing ninja abilities, would go steal one. Anything can be had... wish they had a warehouse aroudn here. Argh.

I wonder what Newer is going to do... no doubt cut prices. $450 for a 'used' 466 MHz plus the return hassle (and being billed $600 originally) or $500 for a new 500 MHz... pretty easy decision there.

I think Newer needs to cut prices by a good $100 to make their card attractive again.
