Hey there. I've recently installed an internal CD-RW (Yamaha, SCSI-3) in my rev. A beige G3's empty drive bay. (It looks great having two CD-ROMs! I had to move the zip drive down….)

Anyway, I've noticed that when I make an alias on my HD to a given CD, the alias fails to resolve unless I have the CD in the same CD-ROM. For example: Let's say I have a disc called "Floyd" in my stock 24x CD-ROM, and make an alias to one of the files on the disc. Later, I want to access that file, but I already have a disc in the stock CD-ROM. No problem! I just stick "Floyd" in my CD-RW! Unfortunately, when I click on the alias, I get the message: "Please insert the disc 'Floyd'." It will do this unless I put the disc in the same drive it was in when I created the alias.

Any suggestions? Possible workarounds?

Thats makes sense, I guess.
Try an AppleScript -

tell application "Finder"
open file "whatever" of folder "whatever" of disk "Floyd"
end tell

Or something like that.
That script prob won't work, I'm in a hurry here, have to leave, I'll fix it up when I get back.

You're right. It doesn't work.

Any other ideas? Anyone? Anyone?

For anyone who cares, I tried this again the other day. Mac OS 9.1 seems to have solved the problem; I can put any disc I want in any drive that'll read it.
Go Apple!
