Hi,

I saw the $199 DiamondMax 45 Plus UDMA/100 7200RPM 46.1 GB IDE drive on < http://www.compgeeks.com/cgi-bin/det...p;sku=205-5462 >, I would like to ask that will it work on my iMac Rev.A with MacOS 9.0.4? Do I need to buy the extra IDE cable, since it is not included inside the package? Thank you for your advice.

iMac Rev.A 233MHz
MacOS 9.0.4 & MacOS X dp4
256MB Ram (VM off)
Formac iProRAIDTV

It will most certainly work. You have to replace your current hard drive, of course, as there is only one drive bay inside the iMac. However, an ATA/100 hard drive is a dumb idea. Don't waste your money on something your iMac can't take advantage of. iMacs (except for possibly this current line) have ATA/33 interfaces. An ATA/100 drive would be a waste of money. Well, actually, at $200 for a 46.1 gig.... hmm, you know, that's actually a nice price.

The fact that the drive supports ATA-100 is pretty useless to an iMac owner, but that doesn't mean that you won't get a performance boost out of the drive. The iMac comes with a 5400 rpm drive that will hardly saturate an ATA-33 bus. You could easily double your sustained throughput. ATA-100 is mostly for burst transfers and RAID.

Good price too.

2 things:

1. Thats a BAD price. Go to www.pricewatch.com. 46 gigs can be had for WELL under 200 bucks

2. I'm sick of snooty G4 G3 tower owners saying "hahA. You wouldnt need a drive that big in an iMac"

Get bent! Hear me?! I probably use my computer harder than you, as I run a 24-7 hotline server, photoshop, flash, mix MP3s, groovemaker sometimes, lots of games (see how big they're getting), not to mention I have an addiction for Techno Mp3s, and I like downloading VCDs. So...yeah..

EAT ME.

Ca$h you are so right, and also the fact that there is only one drive bay, its hell. I wish that there was more room for another drive, but then i would have to get rid of my cd drive.
w3rd..

Sorry but:
There is currently ONE IDE drive that is worthy of an ATA-66 interface: the IBM Deskstar 75GXP. It's ALL OVER the web (see StorageReview.com and pay attention to IOMETER!). Not ONE drive approaches 66Mbps. The Deskstar (and maybe the Quantum Fireball_Plus_Lm) do reach over the 33Mbps ATA-33 limit, so these two drives are the ones that could benefit from an ATA-66 controller.

ATA-100 is for making money, and the hard drive companies are making lots of it.

P.S.: Is Win2k an upgrade for Win98 as much as WinMe is one for NT4?

And I just bought a Quantum Lm for my rev.a w/Gwizard, because of its amazing seek and access times. Great for booting up and starting apps. Time is money. And the Deskstar is not worth it if you don't deal with LARGE files most of your day.

P.S.: The final answer is: Uncle Bill does not want the people to know what they are buying, 2000 and Millenium are the same right?
