OK, I know this is pretty pedestrian for youse guys, but I figgered this wouldn't take more than a microblip for one of you scientists to explain to me; and that is:

What would I have to replace on my Mac (any Mac, but specifically I'd be most interested in answers WRT Performa 6300CDs, and G4 towers) to be able to have dual monitors?

Is there a monitor/display card which can be swapped out? What role does the graphics card play in all this (i.e., all the new Macs come with this "ATI Rage 128 16 Meg graphics accellerator card"; does that have anything to do with it?) What other stuff do I need to know about monitor display/output?

I am a sponge, ready to soak up your liquid knowledge. Thank you in advance.

You need 2 graphics cards for a dual-monitor setup. G4 towers come with one graphics card in a 2x AGP slot. Adding a second graphics card in one of the PCI slots and using that card's monitor output will allow dual monitors. Just plug one monitor into the AGP card and the other into the PCI card, and configure your dual-monitor setup.

just drop another video card into a free pci slot, install the drivers, and hook up the 2nd monitor.
when you reboot, go into the monitors control panel. from there, you can set which monitor will be the main screen (the one w/ the menubar), and how the desktop will be laid out (will the second monitor's desktop be above, below, or to the side of the main screen?)
that's about it
(keep in mind that i've never actually done this before, but i'm pretty sure)

formac actually makes a card called the proformance 4 that will drive two monitors for one card. such a card is called a "dual head" graphics card. this is actually a very good graphics card with all kinds of groovy features and excellent 2d acceleration.

I'm assuming you want to show two different images on the two monitors. If you only want the monitors to "mirror" each other, a $5 VGA splitter at any surplus store will work, as long as both monitors can be set to identical size/refresh rates.
