I'm planning on setting up my StarMax 4000 as a Linux server in my closet, but the fan in the power supply is far too loud and I can still hear it through the door. If I remove the fan I can fit a heatsink in there perfectly, but I'm curious if the heatsink dissapate the heat well enough to keep the power supply cool... I could also drill a few holes in the power supply and mount a small fan there. What other quieting or cooling suggestions? Any about possible harms to the power supply? Thanks.

Just take the necessary cautions when opening the actual power supply unit. There is serious amounts of electricity going through there. Depending on where you live there's different voltage going on in there and its more or less dangerous to get zapped by it.

I don't think a heat sink would dissipate the heat enough, I suggest mounting a NEW fan (of equal size) or a smaller fan in its place. BEFORE you try that, try putting some lubricant in the fan bearings and see if that quiets the fan down. You can use WD-40 or some other spray lubricant to apply right on the post the fan spins and nearby area.

Good luck. Vive la Macintosh!
