Hi, I just got the cool idea to make my powerbook pismo transparant blue. I saw a picture of the new 2001 powerbook, which was pure fantasy, but it did look extremely cool.
Instead of the black shell this one had a completely blue transparant casing.

So, how possible is this? I have seen a picture of a modified powerbook with the top-panels (with the applelogo in it) made from polished metal. This made my fantasy work

How many/which panels can I detach before my powerbook stops working? Is a powerbook like a skeleton with skin, or are the mechanical parts attached to the hull, like a beetle?

I think the metallic powerbooks you're referring to, used adhesive metallic paper attached to the existing panels. I suppose that if someone had enough skill in plastic fabrication and the right equipment for creating plastic prototypes, then it could probably be done. However, it would be quite time-consuming and expensive.

Don't forget that Apple may use some of this metal for shielding against hazardous emissions (for you and the computer) . . . in their recent translucent products, shielding is taken care of within the plastics, but you won't find anything like that . . . I would recommend at least keeping some of the metal panels under your new enclosure.

UBB Code tags here..
You want to use the <img> tags. Upload the picture to a website, or if its already at one, get its location. Then paste it into the body of the post like this:

<IMG>http://www.images.com/image.jpg</IMG>.

Of course, replace the <>'s with the []'s.
Just they wouldn't show up properly if I used them for an image tag - it'd try and find the image and display it.

To SpiffyGuyC:

Your claim that Apple has found a way to make the translucent plastic work as shielding is wrong. In the iBook there are sheets of metal in the casing to work as shield. In the iMacII en iMac2000 the crt-tube has a carbon coating that works as a shield.

Could be a nice design idea though, an iMac casing made of cristal-clear plastic with a very thin layer of aluminum on the inside that is 30-50% see through. Like looking at a very bright lamp through a cd.
