Something just struck me; in the Monitors and Sound control panel you can adjust geometry of the iMac's monitor. This used to done only with monitors that had an additional ADB connector which controlled these settings. Could it be that the iMac uses ADB to communicate with the monitor? Chances are high. It would make it a lot easier to get native ADB in the Mac.

The 233, 266, and 333 MHz iMacs have an ADB chip on the logic board but no connector. Griffin Technology's iMate USB to ADB adaptor accesses this chip.
Also, with considerable effort, you could probably add an ADB connector to a 233. 266, or 333 MHz iMac. This will not work on any iMac faster than 333 MHz.
FYI, Apple's USB monitors also use the Monitors control panel to adjust the geometry.

I know the ADB circuitry is on-board which is why I think the monitor is using it. We wouldn't have to solder on the choke coils etc (which I couldn't find btw because of bad specifications. can anyone help me with this?) etc. The ADB would just be one of the wires attached to the back of the motherboard 'drawer' (you know, where the monitor and IrDA cable are). The monitor can not be accessing the USB as then it would be listed in the Apple System Profiler. We just need to figure out which wires are the ADB port. Anyone wanna help me with this?

By the way, the iMate is not accessing the ADB circuitry because then it wouldn't work on the USB equiped PowerBooks, G3s, G4s or the new iMacs, as they lack ADB circuitry.

then comes the inevitable question, but why??? everything you could do with ADB has been implemented into USB, embrace the future (or present, as the case may be)

a) because it's fun to do so.
b) because I want a cheap way to hook up my Gravis Blackhawk to my iMac. The iMate is NOT a cheap way.
