I've read some other posts on overclocking a Rev A iBook... I'm wondering if anyone has any info on the newest ones. I'm trying to decide what to buy, and I'd like the 466 speed, but I don't need the DVD player. The indigo or key lime version would be just fine, if I could bump it to 466.
Alternatively, is there really that much noticable difference? 466 is only about 27% faster than 366 MHz. How much slower is it, to my 400MHz iMac DV?
Thanks!

I would NOT recommend OCing an iBook, especially to 466. A 27% OC is pretty good for a desktop but almost unheard of for a laptop. I think you would be lucky to get a stable 400 MHz. The heat issues in an iBook are too great to consider serious OCing, leading to stability issues and non-booting. Plus, while the difference would be noticable, it won't affect games and other things that aren't processor intensive. I would recommend saving yourself the trouble and worry and spring for an SE. The DVD might come in handy anyways (a portable DVD would be awesome). Or get a 366 model and put a lot of RAM in it. That has a huge impact on speed. Just my 2¢.

Many people o'clocked there 300Mhz rev A ibook to 400 Mhz with succes. I think you can safely o'clock a 366 mhz ibook to 400, and probably higher.

Well I just ordered the 366MHz iBook today, and spent the extra $$ on Airport, and the 20GB HD. When I get it, i'll have to see how it's speed measures up. I expect it'll be faster than my 200MHz Toshiba that just died today...
When I get it, I'll have to gauge the speed, and see if I want to try it. I figure though, that if the SE's can do 466, then the 366 one should be able to do 400 or 433. It's pretty much the same laptop, really.
Thanks for the replies!

Your comparison up there is very wrong. Megahertz doesn't translate directly to performance. A 466-megahertz G3 is probably 5-15% faster than a 366-megahertz model, and even then, it depends on the task.
This is a sad fact of computer shopping - most people think that megahertz is the only factor in a computer's performance.
Good luck with your iBook!

Seanyepez, I'm guessing you are refering to my estimate of a 27% speed difference when you say the comparison is wrong. I never said, or intended to imply, that a 27% difference in clock speed meant a 27% difference in performance.
In fact I asked the question, how noticable that difference really was. Your statement that the performance is only 5 to 15% depending on the task, answers that question and tells me that I made the right choice in going for the 366 model.

I think you made the right choice if you didn't need DVD.
