Hey guys... since no one in peripherals forum seems to know/care anything about how to control 110v devices (lights, stereo, etc) from USB port...
Got any interesting hacks? I'd like to Timbuktu into my home iMac from my PB and check on furnace, light, status of alarm system, etc.
These are COMPUTERS, aren't they? I thought we were supposed to be able to do anything.
Any real hardware daredevils done anything?

If you don't want to wait, there are solutions for the PC. It is called X10 system(s). You can do everything you want, from turning on the water heater from an internet connected PC, to broadcasting a video camera feed from your dog's kennel.

I tried VirtualPC and it doesn't work. The Mac has a messed up serial port.

But you could always setup a slave PC with Win95 and have it listen commands from your Mac.

Again, this all is if you don't want to wait and get it now.

You might try http://www.smarthome.com/ for a line of X10 devices and both PC and MAC software to run same.

Thanks, guys!
The smarthome site showed that there's now x10 for Mac!
I'll do some research into it.

A useless post, but isn't there a company that has been offering this for the last few years? I forgot their name, but I know I've seen their stuff listed.

X-10 has been mac compatible for quite some time now. The serial controllers sold for the PC are mac compatible, although you may need a simple cable adapter. The software is what's important, there are several packages out there, namely X-tension and MouseHouse. You can also send the thing serial commands through a terminal program, but that's more for programming gurus.
