Does anyone know how to disable the internal monitor on an iMac DV and drive the external one to something higher than 1024 x 768?

The *$#@ing stupid soldered-on graphics card doesn't allow it.

The graphics card can hardly be held responsible for its permanent position on the board - call the designers *$#@ing stupid, not the card.

You don't think a crappy card with only 8 megs of VRAM should be called *$#@ing stupid too?

Perhaps, but the VRAM is not the reason the res is locked. I think Apple has crippled the chip, but try a software called "SwitchRes" to see if there are other settings available.

The video card isn't the problem, IIRC, it's the monitor. The monitor only supports 1024x768.

Now, if you were to remove the monitor, and replace it witha another 15" capable of supporting 1280x1024, and found the correct driver, well that would be a different story.

Since the external monitor is mirror only, I think ou are SOL without altering the monitor inside in some way.

But this is all guesswork, and I will defer to my more learned colleagues.

going higher than 1024*768 on a 15" monitor that's 14.1 viewable? I use 1280*1024 on my 19" and think that's a bit too small to read comfortably.
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

Hehe... try 13.8.
14.1 is the viewable size of the Powerbooks, which is actually BIGGER than the viewable on their desktop iMac cousins.
