Can the single processor G-4 450s and 500s be upgraded to dual processor models?

I heard on the mac show live awhile back that an upgrade manufacturer was gonna be coming out with a dual G4 upgrade. Dunno if this is truth or rumor though.

I'm sure this will happen. At one time they were selling quad-processor upgrades for the older beige macs (back in the 604 era). Because the system supports multiple processors, the hardware manufacturers can't be too far behind now.

The only things that are differnt between then dual G4 nd the old G4 is the gigabit eithernet chip sitting next to the processor board. I looked at my mobo, and there is actually pins already in the board for the chip. Apple was thinking ahead? Also the Processor card uses the existing cpu conector. I'd definitly say that there will be upgrades very soon...

I swapped my dual's MP card into my single G4 machine it works with the Apple module. There is also the lack of the Internal firewire connector but you can solder it on the pins are still there.

Check out the november issue of MacAddict, scrapbook (page 24)
it seems the zif socket is gone and a new multipin socket is used. the cpu daughtercard is also screwed to the motherboard.
no reason why this can't be upgraded later though.

Yes, the single processor G4's can be upgraded to duals. Powerlogix, XLR8, and a couple other upgrade vendors have already announced Dual G4 upgrades. They will be available in Q1 2001.

That only applies for legacy PCI macs and zif based macs. The only serious product for now seems to come from XLR8 in 2001 Q1. The announced mp card from Powerlogix back in february appearently silently died as nothing was heard of it since.

Okay, Trout, you were partly right in that they are targetting PCI Macs and ZIF-based Macs first, but the press release from Powerlogix states "Future PowerForce Dual models will support Sawtooth-based Apple G4 machines." so they are looking at upgrades for the single processor G4 400's, 450's and 500's.

Of course this will most likely be after Q1 2001. The press release is at http://www.powerlogix.com/news/press.html#dual

You got be kidding, the announcement was made at MWSF january 5th 2000. Last sentence of the pressrelease:

Orders are being accepted for shipment in February at a suggested retail of $1199 for the PowerForce Dual G4 350 and $1599 for the Dual G4 400.

FEBRUARI 2000 THAT IS!

Sure, they promised a Sawtooth upgrade too "somewhere in the future" LOL.

Dream on man, it's nothing but vaporware.
