hi

i wondered whether i'm able to install another EIDE drive into my G4? currently there's the standard DVD ROM drive in front, and below some space for a zip drive, according to the manual. now, zip drives are as floppy drives much smaller (about 3.5' i think). is it somehow possible to install another CD drive or CD burner whatever, into that slot? or will i have to replace the dvd drive?

thanks
patrick

if you'd look back a bit you'd find a thread here and in the g3/g4 forum relating to this.

basicaly, you can either swap the dvd drive for whatever other kinda 5 1/2 drive you want, or you can play around with a hacksaw and force a 5 1/2 inch drive to fit by trimming the case.

It has gotten worse since those mods were last discussed. If you want to put a 5.25 device where the Zip goes, you reportedly have to clip the heat sink a bit, as the G4 heat sink is molded to fit around the rear edge of the Zip bay.

On the new dual processor G4s, the heat sink now extends a Lot further.

The Zip drive bay works well for another standard 3.5 hard drive. If you have an MP G4, or plan to get a processor upgrade to MP someday, you might have to replace the heat sink with couple of fans. You would then have to live with the noise, and the voided warranty (on a processor upgrade - modding the case & heat sink with hacksaw would void the Apple warranty anyway)

I want to install a iMac DV original slot in DVD in a B/W G3.
Above the upper slot would be cool, but that means destroying the apple logo...
Anyway, the problem is the 50-pin cable of the DVD (power suply incl.)
Is it possible...

If someone can locate a slot-loading CDRW, I will gladly hacksaw my G4 case to mount it. I think the plan would be to remove the cage bay for the Zip drive, cut the case opening to accommodate CDs, add additional mounting brackets, then get out an exacto knife and cut a slot into the lower face plate.

I would gladly void my warrantee for an internal CDRW.

The mod won't work because the heatsink is going to get in the way! I just checked it with my system and the 3.5" bay just clears the heatsink. That is why apple cut down the fins on the one side of the heat sink. That really sux cause it wold have been great to put a 5.25" drive in there. :-(
