Just wondering: is there any way to make the Mac continue to play through the speakers even with something in the audio out-plug? Software or hardware, anything goes.

(What I really want to is have the iSub play even when there is something in the plug, but that might be harder to achieve)
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

OK, so it's a software issue? I'll move the question then.

I don't really have any helpful advice, but I am also interested in a solution to this problem. I would like to put some satellite speakers in my bedroom but still be able to listen to my mac in the living room.

I used to have a Rev.A iMac and it had a speaker out plug that had a loose wire or something and would allow just this sort of mod. Unfortunately, I sold it and am not brave enough to do experimental operations on my SE.
Happy polly loggies me
