Hello,

I am curious. Is there any cd-rw or cd-r which can replace the atapi matshita cd-dvd-rom drive in an iMac slotloading machine. Or must I cut the Imac case? I also wouldn't mind to have the connection cable coming out of the slot itself.. Just the right size! and swap devices @ your command
I really would like to have a cd burner and ide/atapi burners are in general cheaper than Firewire ones. The dvd-rom has no use for me. Watching dvd's on a 15 inch screen is not really a pleasure. And there are still not that many dvd-rom appz out yet (if any)

Thanks,

Paul.

Don't know about replacing the dvd drive, but there are people out there who just bought really long IDE/power extension cables and ran the ribbon out the side of their case (using the DVD's bus). Not particularly elegent and highly warranty-voiding, but a lot cheaper than Firewire or problematic USB.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com has a database of drives known to work on the Mac. Maybe this has what you're looking for.

This may not be helpful to you yet, but Toshiba has recently released a CDRW/DVD-ROM combo drive. Unfortunately, it's PC-only and not slot-loading. However, according to their website, they may make a mac version in the future.

Hi,

I knew of the existance of the cd-rw/dvd combo of toshiba. Appearantly Steve must have contacted toshiba to tell them about my idea I posted on the apple imac support pages, as you state that they are working on an apple compatible version.
http://discuss.info.apple.com/boards/imac.nsf/9adb bd76810b04698525631b0073cbfb/491a6869dea487e48625691100779361?OpenDocument

so maybe an Imac with cdrw/dvd will appear some day.

I checked xl8yourmac, and the combo actually already is mac compatible. If you connect it to your atapi connector everything seems to work nice. It's even bootable. So the mac version they are working on may in fact be a slot loading one, cause how could you otherwise modify it to become even more mac compatible?

I know, highly speculative but it would be so nice. For now I think I will just buy a cheap mutsati drive. Even when I add the pyro firewire kit to that, I will still be cheaper off than buying a 'normal' firewire drive and I have more drives to choose from. http://www.pccablesdirect.com/ADS/API-800.htm

Very impressive research! Gee, a slot-loading cdrw/dvd would be a great drive to put in all of Apple's desktop machines. I hope they do it.

Ok, so these Toshiba drives do in fact work on Macs?
The thing is I can understand them working with the IDE/ATA interface on macs, its just the fact you'd need drivers to run the drive, and you surely couldn't get any until they released a mac version. I suppose any talented Linux user could install Linux and the drive on a mac and write their own.
