Regarding the deal at DealNN:

Maxtor DiamondMax 30.0GB Hard Drive Kit Item No. 428385
Add this 3 1/2" EIDE hard drive to your computer and upgrade it for high performance. With 7200 RPM and 2MB cache...

I have a possible dumb question. Can an EIDE drive have an ATA interface? If so can it be attached to my G4/450 ATA chain? If so, is it advisable. Can I expect performance enough to use it for Final Cut Pro?

Any insight would help.
Thanks,
Eric

yeah, I got one...
I've yet to write assembly to control IDE ports/HDs...and wondering if ATA is a subset of IDE or what? else why would they just randomly create the "ATA interface" to confuse people?
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

Thanks for the quick reply. Since you seem to be on the ball here I'll throw you another question: will Apple's software controller be able to run the Maxtor or will I have to buy FWB HD Toolkit or something? The drive says it comes with software for Windows, not Mac.
Thanks for the expertise!
Eric

Just use Drive Setup to format the hard drive when you get it. However, make sure you set it to "slave." Having two "masters" on an ATA chain is not pretty, trust me.

gelly, didn't you know computers are supposed to be confusing? That's why Apple came along... although we had a heck of a time repairing some severely fragged disks today. Criminy.

more less related question...does DMA stand for Direct Memory Access?

The Maxtor 30 gig works like a charm, using it right now in my B&W tower,

If there is a difference, it's that ATA was the expansion designed to support removeable media (the one that did not was called ATdisk. Both of them came with the PC AT.). By the way people talk, EIDE=IDE=ATA, even though this is not strictly true if you read specs.

DMA does indeed stand for Direct Memory Access.

Thanks for all your help. I did go ahead and buy, then install the drive. Works beautifully. The transfer rate between drives is jaw dropping and I haven't dropped a frame in FCP yet. There's a good resource for all this random knowledge about computer standards, by the way. http://www.webopedia.com.
