I have a grayscale lcd screen (640x480) from a PB520 that I'd like to convert to a monitor for my desktop mac. It has model LM64P858 on the back. I have the inverter board and the rest of the 520 if I need any of that stuff. Has anyone done this or anything similar before?

You cant install VNC server un your PowerMac and install VNC client in the laptop. The server will pass the screen to the laptop and the laptop will pass the keystrokes to the PowerMac.

You should first network them together.

I will be surprised if you get fast video though.

I have tried this with my working PowerBook and apple network assistant, but the powerbook that I have the extra screen from has no processor card, HD or ram. I am looking for a hardware solution that would let me plug the screen directly into a monitor port.
