I know this topic has been discussed countless times, but here's a new question. My Rev B (233, 4G, 160M) has an operating tempurature of upto 131F after heavy usage (ie playing Alpha Centauri). I am nearing capacity of my HD and want to upgrade. My question is the following:

Manufacturers' websites list many hard drives with a maximum operating temperature of 55 degrees Celsius (which is 131F). Will the new hard drive work in my iMac?

Hi,

What new hard you are looking for? I bought the Maxtor 7200PRM ATA/100 46.1GB for my iMac Rev.A w/o any heating problem(56C), room temp is 76F and 43F outside. I have 256MB ram too.

131 is nothing. My rev. D runs at 145-150 after heavy use and its in a fairly confined area. That's also with a new Maxtor 30 GB 7200 rpm HD and the cache at 2:1 (167 MHz). A new HD shouldn't affect your temp. It didn't affect mine.

Check www.xlr8yourmac.com for info on your particular drive. There are lots of reviews for new iMac HDs.
