i get a repeating clicking noise when i start the computer. the harddisk sounds like its spinning fine. i'm thinking the read/write heads have fallen off track or crashed down on the disk even. i'm not sure.

i do know that data recovery services are real expensive, and i'd really like to get all my stuff back without having to pay a fortune. i understand that these places use special procedures to get the data back but i was wondering if theres any way i can open the lid and fix this problem without destroying the disk, myself.

thanks.

Don't even think about it. There's a reason why those data recovery services are so damn expensive.

the inside of modern hard drives are pressurized, hence the sealing. data recovery places put them in clean/pressured rooms, and they have the experience. You'd be surprised if you open up your machine, make sure nothing is touching the exposed circut board on the bottom and that all te connections are sound, do that, it might work, but don't open it, you'll just be throwing it out after that.
