I'm going to sell off my G4/400 and 7100/80 soon, and was wondering what to do with my 7200/90, since I'm going to keep it. I think I'm going to use all three PCI slots in it for: a G3/G4 upgrade, a new video card (voodoo3, possibily), and a USB card. And I'm going to slap that bitch of a 500MB hard drive outta it and pop a new bigger SCSI one in it.
Since I have nothing else to do with the 7200, what do you guys suggest I do with it? Should I pimp the hell outta it with modifications?? Hell, I don't have any ideas. Gimme some Thanks

I'm selling the G4 and 7100/80 for $$$...
to invest in parts for a PC system I'm building. (don't flame me for this)
With the leftover money, I'm gonna use it on the 7200... that's why.
I've been using the 7200/90 since it came out for Apple, until this April when I got the G4/400... it's a workhorse, that's what I can say... so why not? I love the thing.

I have to use 7200's at work. They're SLOW! Man, you must be nuts.... And, I didn't even think they MADE upgrades for 7200's, maybe some have just come out that I don't know about though.... I'd keep the 7100/80, and upgrade it.
And you're doing this for a PC? Man, I'm not even gonna go there...

There is a new Sonnet upgrade for the 7200.
And... the 7200 has PCI slots.. whilst the 7100 has NuBus. See the difference?
Plus, I like the 7200's case design better than the 7100's, anyway.

Don't waste your money by buying an upgrade for the 7200. It won't improve speed that much. Use the money you woulda spent on it to ::shudder:: put more stuff into the PC. Use te 7200 to play bolo or something, if you're really that fond of it.

first of all... Just buying SCSI drives for the 7100 or 7200 will cost more than a new machine... let alone the 72pin RAM!!!!
I say sell it all, with the money left over buy an old powerbook, or beige g3. Nowadays it is *NOT* worth upgrading old machines.

I have a 7500 that has 3 PCI slots and a daughter card slot for the processor. I upgraded to a 500MHz G3 and the thing boooooooots!!! But the 7200 need some crazy thing to upgrade, it's like a mini motherboard that plugs into one of the pci slots or something, and it's expensive too! I'd say keep the processor and find some silly tedious tak for it to do.
I also upgrded to USB and IDE and am very happy with the performance of my machine.

FYI the 7200 uses 168-pin DIMMs (still pricey... around $2/MB, if not more).
I have a PowerCenter 150 (which uses a modified 7200 motherboard so that the processor isn't soldered). I have it up to 256 MB RAM, 9.1 GB SCSI, 500 MHz G3, 40x CD, 4x8x CD-RW, 10/100 PCI, TV/fm PCI, USB/FireWire PCI... doesn't get much more pimped than that, there's no room left in it. I also replaced the fans with ultra quiet ones (it's still pretty noisy) and painted it black. It's been sitting in my closest for the past year crunching SETI. It was primary Mac 4-5 years ago when I got it, and was so for a couple years.

Need to upgrade to ATA66, rather then SCSI. The ATA is much faster/cheaper.
