Wow Sine, looks cool. Just hope there aren't gonna be any problems due to the missing sheilding.

I must admit it does look very cool Sine.

I got my KeyLime iBook yesterday... and today I opened it up, and it does indeed have that same super-thin aluminum shielding. The plastic is sort of transparent 'milky' white, not quite as clear as in your pictures, but still fairly see-through.

As you said, all the insides have their own layers of shielding, though I still can't help thinking that the stuff you removed must have served some function... Or could it have been purely cosmetic?

Well, since the pieces are aluminum they would be for RF sheilding... as FCC regulations are pretty tight they may be needed to meet spec. But I think much of it is cosmetic, and in the new FW ibooks its much less necissary...

I thought about that too, the airport antennas are at either side of the display, towards the top, but were (of course) outside the thin 'removable' aluminum shield. However, the rest of the insides are still shielded themselves as Sine has explained. In fact, without that conductive material so close to the two antennas, you might even expect airport to work a little better, give a tad more range without the shielding.
