In a few hours today, I modified my Palm USB Adapter so that it drew power from the USB port and had a cord leading to the port where you plug in the adapter to the serial cable. The USB outpuut is pretty much what the palm needs.
Now I don't need a power adapter as long as I have a USB plugin. Yay!

I modified my Visor Deluxe and it's hotsync cradle, to use rechargeables and recharge in the cradle. Same set of batteries since the begining of december, still a full 3+ volts.
Step by step instructions: http://www.maksystems.com/visor/index.html

Now, however, whenever its in the cradle and its off, it drains battery power faster than if it wasn't in the cradle at all...
do I have the contacts backwards or what?

Without knowing the way the Palm cradle is put together, I can only guess... but I would guess that whatever you did to apply the 5volts to the Palm is allowing power to go the other way too, when things are 'off'. Try adding a diode in series. This way whenever the charging voltage is higher than the Palm's voltage, it will allow charging, but if the cradle voltage drops below the Palm, it will stop the current from flowing the other way round.
Again, just a guess.
