good morning.

here is what I have now...

yosemite desktop 300mhz
256 ram
external scsi cd-r (a nasty sony one that makes more noise than a 73 pinto)

running mac os 8.6

so the question is, if I am living on a relatively fixed income that does not allow for a new cpu for the next 12 months or so, what can/should upgrade now for a couple of hundred bucks? anything?

should I buy os 9.1 before I even think of upgrading hardware?

should I lose the ornage micro scsi card and the sony external cd-r first?

more ram (isn't this always a good idea)?

thanks for any help any of you can offer.

one addition. I have the blue and white 17" studio monitor as well. and a bigger piece of crap I have never been so unlucky to have. it's been back and forth to the local mac rejuvenator severla times (though they may be part of the problem). anyway, I have been considering an lcd panel. though smaller and expensive I am wondering if anyone here has any experiences with specific models.

I also know that apple seems to be changing the video connection on each iteration of the hardware. any suggestions on what compatible? I would love to get rid of this tube but don't want to buy myself more trouble.

thanks again for any suggestions, comments or remarks.

I have to say I don't think you really need to upgrade anything... maybe get a processor upgrade though.
256 RAM is plenty, if the burner/SCSI card work fine, no reason to get rid of them...

As for the monitor, I have the graphite 17" ASD, and its awesome... never a prob.
One piece of advice: stay away from ADC, whatever you do. If Apple know whats good for them they'll ditch ADC, it was a very stupid move in the first place.
Get DVI or VGA...
I say get a 19" or 21" CRT, there are some cheap ones around, like the LaCie Electron Blue or whatever its called...

Sorry I can't be of more help...

The operative word is CD-R. If your Sony is a CD-R (as opposed to a CD-RW), you might consider upgrading that. CD-RWs are getting cheaper every day, and it is so nice to be able to rewrite discs. It makes backing stuff up ridiculously easy — not to mention mix discs for the car! (Just make sure you have an RW-compatible CD player. All Philips players are, and other companies are starting to jump on the bandwagon.)

More RAM is never a bad idea (I just bumped my G3 up to 640M), but if you don't need it, don't get it. I do a lot of intense graphics work, some of which (unfortunately) requires Windoze NT (which I run under Virtual PC 2.1.3).
When it comes to Windoze, you can never have enough.
