What modifications can I do to my new iBook without voiding warranty. once that has run out i won't mind but for now i'd rather play it safe.

This is the "official" TIL article of user installable mods.

The replacement of the hard drive is bit of a "gray" area. If you can take your new gem nearly completely apart and remove the old hard drive to swap with a larger one, then you should work as an Apple Technician!

cmcleod-
If you want to stay in warranty, you have your answer from imacaholic. You might be able to get away with removing the outer cover and changing the color or something cosmetic like that. Any hardware mods beyond the range set by the TIL will void your warranty.

CyberGreg- Nice piece of work. Hope you keep the page up(I bookmarked it), I'm getting an iBook this fall. Hopefully it'll have a decent video card then.
That HD replacement looks almost as daunting as the keyboard backlight I'm working on for my pro-keyboard.

What do you think you'll be able to do to modify the machine while still maintaining the ability to go to Apple and say, "It's broken. Fix!"

Pretty much anytime you open the case, add in anything that wasn't there from the beginning, take away something that was there from the beginning, or all of the above, (except RAM) you render Apple's guarantee that the machine will function properly null and void, unless you are an Apple Certified Tech. This makes anything fun or cool or wild pretty much either for out of warranty cases, or for those brash daredevils that don't mind if they toss (+/-)$2000 into the breeze.

You can't really expect them (or any company) to accept something on a warranty claim that has been modified. They don't know what you did, or how you did it, whether you have the skills to piggyback a GeForce3 onto the logic board or not. That's the way a warranty works. You might be able to sneak something past them, but...

That TIL article is there specifically to answer your question.
