Hey, I'm working on putting Bronze Keys from a Dead Powerbook Keyboard onto my Tangerine iBook. I've only got the top row done, but I should be finished after this weekend.

It's a fairly tedious process, doing it a key at a time, but the Brown, White and Orange look so nasty together.

Honestly, where else can you get a computer whose colour scheme make it look like it was made in 1982?

You do know that the keyboards in both the iBook and PowerBook are the exact same (except for color)?

All you need to do is unplug the keyboard from the PowerBook and plug it into the iBook... it's very easy. The small plug at the end of the keyboard cable (that goes into the motherboard) lifts out with little effort...

Still, key by key is... er... more rewarding... I guess...

Yes, I understand replacing the whole keyboard is easier, but it's a DEAD Powerbook keyboard.

Not much use replacing a good iBook keyboard with a dead one.

God bless apple for making interchangable parts on their machines, I have a few more things I want to do with my G4, including popping off the Graphite door Apple logos and replacing them with blue ones. Also, the orange Apple logo under the iBook screen is the same size as the white Apple logo over top the DVD Drive in the G4, I just need to figure out how to get it out of the iBook.

Just because I'm curious, what are you doing with the parts you aren't using? like the graphite panels and logos? I might be interested in them... Do you have the remainder of the blue&white g3 case, or did you just get the panels when you converted your G4's looks?

If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

I just got the panels. Some parts I have paid for, others I just got. I already have two people fighting over the Graphite panels, both friends who have a B&W G3 and a Graphite 17" Studio Display.

Did I just read that an ibook keyboard will work in a Pismo? Hottt. Ok, I guess I'll be looking for one of those for my powerbook.

Misha is correct... sort of.

While the two keyboards themselves are almost identical, the cables which connects to the MOBO are completely different lengths. The Powerbook cable is about an inch long and connects right at the bottom of the keyboard, whereas the iBook cable is about 3 inches long and snake under the RAM cover. These cables are attached inside the keyboard itself, so it's not just a case of swapping cables.

So when are you gonna post pics of the finished G4 and iBook then? I'd love to see them.

I want to see what it looks like too! . I am trying to find a good working iBook keyboard to put into my Pismo! I can't find one for the life of me. Does anybody know where to get individual parts from?

I'll try to have it finished by Monday, and post some pics. I think I'll keep the letters white, and make the rest of the keyboard bronze. My reasoning behind this is that I use my iBook a lot in the dark, and those white keys are a godsend.

The keyboard in an ibook is identical to the keyboard in a bronze connector and all, but it is a completely diffrent connector from a FireWire. The keys are interchanable between all of them.

wait fire, explain this again please? I'm confused about what you said. Will an iBook keyboard work AS IS in a Pismo? If the answer is no, then you're saying it is still possible to pull the keys off an iBook keyboard and pop them onto a Pismo. Thanks

Thats right. All of the keys from each portable for the past 4-ish years are interchangeable, from the original PB G3 to the latest iBooks...Pismos, Lombards, iBooks and all.

Play it cool
