The Idea:
Remove a screen from a Powerbook 500. (Aprox.8", 640X460, 256 color). Somehow build myself a converter/adapter to convert the video input of the screen to normal DB-15 video connectors.
Imagein this 8" LCD on a retractable arm (Like Crow's arms for MST3K fans) attatched to my bed post, and a Quadra 700 @100MHz upgraded lets say, undermy bed, and a keyboard with a build in trackpad on it, on my lap, it'd be the near perfect setup! Not to mention about a million other uses for these screens, if there is a relatively cheap and easy way to do this, 500's will go up in value again, normally LCD's are very expensive $4,000 for 22"

after you do that, you could catheterize yourself , get a colostomy , and hook yourself up to an i.v. , and you'd never have to leave the bed again : p ..... but seriously, it would be cool.

It's OK to waste away hours each day lying in bed watching TV but to lie in bed using the internet and actually DO something, that's being lazy? Or being "addicted". I hate those preconceptions. ThoughIi do get you were kidding, just saying though.
So anyway, come on now, where are all the peeps with the technical know how to give me (or should I say us) some actual instructions?

There are special graphics cards out there that allow you to connect a digital device to their "feature connection" only problem is you will have to get the 'pin outs' for the display as each display usually has a diferent wiring connection. It may be possible to connect an LCD to a normal graphics card with some fairly heavy mods and a bit of electronics 'know-how'. One easy way is to use a remore control app like VNC to view and contol the other comp from a laptop, or use the other system's Keyboard and mouse but view the output on the laptop's screen. There will be some lag but at 10Mbit the system is very usable, 100Mbit may provide a much better result.

That's what I've been told before, but would like to avoid something like VNC. My goal is to mount it on top of the innards for a graphics tablet, put a thin piece of glass over it, build it a new frame, and have one of those write-on graphics tablets where you can see what you draw. My screen is very similar to the one 1008.com wants to use, except I have the grayscale version. It has identical pinouts (which I do have.) I can post them if anyone wants.

I got my hopes up with that VNC program, i could have a power book near a quadra, and use the power book for one thing, and the quadra for another thing through the powerbook using VNC. But VNC server is PPC only. Damnit!

Dont bother about VNC. Network Assistant is much faster than VNC (it's optimized for Mac whereas VNC is meant for all platforms). It gives smooth results even when controlling a 68k powerbook over a LocalTalk connection.

Network Assistant is pretty good, if you're willing to invest money in it. VNC is free, and seems to work just fine.
I'm still looking for that pdf I had with the lm64p858 pinouts in it... let ya know when I find it...

VNC DOES NOT WORK on 68K's. You can control a PPC with a 68K, but you can't use it to control a 68K.

That is correct. Network Assistant may be your only choice. I don't know how usable the connection speed would be on a 68K, although I can confirm that it works.

Network Assistant is designed to give a system admin control of any computer on the network through their machine. It is only available with ASIP, a major disadvantage to using anet. I can confirm that the 3.5.2 version I have will work with a 68K, as far as the new 4.0 version I don't know.

So how does it allow you to control another mac?

Basically you hit the control button in Anet and it shows you the remote screen. Anything you hit on the keyboard or do with the mouse is sent to that machine. Basically everything is controlled, with the exception of low-level stuff like force quit and reboot.

Is VNC anything like TB2? How much is it, and where can I get it?

1008.com??? It is some Chinese web site filled with a bunch of question marks.

VNC is open source and free. You can find it by doing a search for VNC on versiontracker. It's on AT&T's UK research page, but i dont remember the address.

Sounds vaguely similar to something from Hannibal... (and no, this isn't a spoiler).

Can anyone give me some more info on VNC, like where I can find the linux version, and stuff like that?
It looks like a great thing for me to use to keep my comps I'm leaving at home working while I'm at college.
All help is appreciated.

I've been using it off and on for a month or so. It can be slow at times, for example, I can use my WGS 6150 with 10bT to control my PC laptop with a 100 Mbps NIC, but I cannot control the Mac from the PC. I'm not sure if it is because I have two monitors on the Mac or if it's because the Mac is only connected to the network at 10 Mbps while the PC is connected at 100 Mbps.
It is a pretty neat piece of software, though.

Well, I got it, but it doesn't work well with my PM8500.
Also, I can't get the server to work on my linux machine.
