I want to remove the fan from my quad 700. Is this safe? It is not overclocked or anything. The powersupply does have an overheat shutdown mechanism in it, doesn't it?

Okay, i've done some testing and have decided against it. I'd rather live with the noise then the smell of toasting mac.

Ya, I wouldn't remove the fan - besides, the Q700 uses the same powersupply as my IIci, and the IIci is a very quite machine.

My Q700 is kinda noisy, but it's due to it's hard drive, it not apple(quantum), it's a seagate i think, 2 GB, and it's a noisy biatch! But the Quadra is in the other room so I don't have to worry about it. I have taken it apart and noticed that the processor gets mighty hot, and it doesn't even have a heat sink on it, so i'd say if you got a heat sink and glued it to the processor, and maybe even got a smaller quieter fan to put right on the heat sink, you'd probably be ok. You might wanna leave your nubus slots hole open, if they are free, to add a bit more convection, or hell, even drill a few holes near the bottom and on the top, that will get the air flowing natrually.

Your processor doesn't have a heatsink? Mine has a fairly good sized one.
I've found that my pm6400 is slightly quieter, so im gonna use it as my server. More ram and faster processor anyway..

You could always try replacing the existing fan with a quiester one. Just make sure it points (blows?) the same direction and is rated for the same voltage/current of your existing supply.
Or remove the old one and rig up a new quieter fan with a new supply.

Yeah, I've tried that. It has quieted my machine considerably, although the fan always seems to run noisier inside the computer than it does externally. I'm guessing that there are more surfaces to vibrate when it is bolted to a metal power supply...

I installed my Q700 board into a IIVX case, its a steel desktop case,
It seems to be less noise, because of the steel case
