I don't play games a lot, and since I bought my Mac I didn't play anything. But now I'm thinking about buying Alice or RealMyst, and have a few questions.

I have a G4-400. It has a RAGE 128 Pro card - 16MB SDRAM, but don't know whether it supports 3D or not, and do I need VRAM? Furthermore I have only 128MB memory, and I read somewhere that Alice needs 148. Is this true? I should buy more memory anyway, but still...

ATI 128 do support the 3D you need no problem there

Regarding memory, if the application need 148 MB memory it can use any free memeory that is mother "real" RAM and virtual memory. Real memory is faster than virtual but it very much depend on the application if the penalty for having virtual memory is significant.

128 MB is not to bad with VM on you have about 80-100 MB left for the game and that is a sizable part of the 148 MB it need.

Well, you've got two issues- old video card and low RAM.

Not sure which G4 you have, but if you've got an AGP slot, I'd seriously consider investing in an AGP graphics card, if only to support Quartz Extreme under 10.2.

I just picked up an ATI 8500 from Amazon for about $180.

Video card aside, I'd definitely invest in some RAM. It's the cheapest way to improve performance across the board. 128MB is pretty much the bare minimum these days. Especially under OS X, more RAM will make your computer run more smoothly and stably. Check out RAMWatch- you can get 512MB for about $65 these days.
