Try running Quake for OS 9 first, then the updater. If you've never run Quake there is no .cfg file, so that is probably the reason.

There have been so many Quake 3 updates that you only need one file from the CD. The fastest way to get it set up is:

1 - expand the v1.30 archive as it sets up the proper folders and sub folders on your hard drive.
2 - expand the v1.31b5 archive and move the updated files into the Quake3 folders set up by v1.30.
3 - copy the large (457MB) pak0.pk3 file off your Quake3 CD (Quake3/baseq3 folder) onto your hard drive (Quake3/baseq3 folder).

You'll end up with 2 Quake 3 applications, one is for OSX and the other for Classic. With a G4 iMac, you are better off not running in Classic. One performance tweak you might want to try is this:
s_chunksize 4096 <cr>

You need to exit Q3 afterwards and run it again. This only works for G4 Macs under OSX. It's best not to use other tweaks with this one. For more info, see the before and after Q3 benchmarks here - half way down the page. You won't get as dramatic an increase as those dual G4s, but it will still be a significant boost:

You can get the v1.31b5 update availble here:

Happy fraggin ..........joe

No, Quake3 automatically creates a fresh config file (q3config.cfg) whenever none is found. Deleting or renaming q3config.cfg is the most common way to run benchmarks. See these sites for more info:

In solidage's case, it's likely that Quake3 simply can't find all it's files. Fastest way to get it working is to install v1.30 and the v1.31b5 update, then copy the pak0.pk3 file from the CD. That is what Graeme Devine (Id's Mac programmer) recommended.........joe
