A couple of summers ago I had an internship at 3DO. They make pc and console games and I believe they own the company that does Heroes of Might and Magic.
Anyway I heard this guy talking about how a game has to do really well in the first few weeks or else its not going to sell. Meaning most of a games sales come right away.
However I see games like The Sims (pc version) and their expansion packs that are always in the top 10 in sales week in and week out. I see this type of game as a casual gamers' game. They might not go out right away and buy a game, but a few buy it each week and in the end it is really successful.
This is also the kind of people that seem to be mac game fans. Do you all agree? Do mac games sell huge numbers right away or do they have a steady rate each week? If it is true that games don't sell huge right at the start do you think pc publishers think we are the same as the pc side and just look at the sales during the first few weeks and say that a mac game isn't selling well and abandon it?
I think its less of a platform issue and more of a genre issue. If a publisher is releasing a 'Deer Hunter', 'Sims', or 'Max Payne' type of game, they know what the demographics and buying patterns for each type are.
