I see that there is an offline version of Warbirds III for training (Warbirds III: Pilot Academy) and I thought this might be of interest to my father. I DL'd Warbirds a while back, but the keyboard controls and general interface looked a little too complicated for a novice.

So my question is this, will a joystick make game play easier and, if so, can anyone recommend a non-intimdating joystick that will work with this game?

I can only recommend one brand of joystick which is CH Products. I love the Fighterstick. Though with the USB one you don't have an outside setup contol panel like the old ADB one under OS9. They are a bit pricey but worth it.

There are a few newer sticks out there but I couldn't tell ya anything about them. If there is a message board over at the Warbirds site then, of course, ask them for good advise on that particular game.

The CH products are famous, but I haven't had a chance to try one yet.

Mostly because I'm perfectly happy with my Saitek Cyborg

http://www.saitekusa.com/usa/prod/cyborgold.htm

It comes with a little tool for adjusting its size just right, has a twist- grip for rudder control and for me, just does the job very nicely.

There are force feedback models, too, but the OS X HID Manager doesn't yet support that (or does it?).

Gameplay will be much more fun and understandable with joystick. Learn to use the little hat control to look around quickly and you get a much better idea of where you're getting shot from.
