It doesn't support the 256-color games yet. Only the early 16-color AGI games.
This means, Mother Goose, Space Quest I and II, King's Quest I, II, III, (not sure about 4), Hero's Quest I, Police Quest I (not sure about II), Leisure Suit Larry I, II (not sure about 3).
Yeah...I'd give anything to play Space Quest III, IV and King's Quest V.
How do you use it? When you launch the program it'll show you a 'Open' dialog box...just select the folder with the game data and click open.

Yup, all my Mac versions (Space Quest I, II, Police Quest I, King's Quest I, II, III and Leisure Suit Larry). I'm almost certain the data files are identical for both the Mac versions and PC versions so if you own the PC version, go right ahead and use the data files for the PC version.
Even if they weren't identical, I'm sure Sarien would recognize the PC data files since it's an open-source project with developers from many platforms working on it.

Yeah, I used to use vMac for my old Sierra games...but I had never seen them in color...vMac is emulates a Classic B&W Mac so all my games looked exactly the way I used to play 'em on my Mac 128k. Booo. So Sarien is a godsend.
Although vMac is still excellent for other true B&W games...Dungeon of Doom and Cap'n Magnet...oh and Shufflepuck Cafe.
There's also a BasiliskII OS X port...I've gotten my Space Quest IV to work in it...but the other Sierra games look for working sound and BasiliskII for OS X doesn't emulate that yet so the games promptly quit.

BasiliskII
I seem to need ROM files to run BasiliskII. Any idea where to acquire them?
Oh, this may sound stupid but, do I need the original System 6 or 7 to run BasiliskII?

i don't know where you can get a ROM file (it is necessary, though).
you will need system 6 or 7 and a disk image set up that you'll have basiliskii boor from. check here http://mes.emuunlim.com/software/macos/macos.htm for the system software.

Pretty much unless you can find a ROM at a Warez site or off Gnutella you are out of luck unless you know someone with an old Mac sitting around. Sadly my old PowerMac 7100 and MacIIci were given away a few years back. However the main game I wanted to play, Dark Castle, wasn't available anywhere. So it isn't a huge loss. . .
I do wish there was a port of those games to OSX.

i found the quadra 1mb rom with google- useful if your quadra has given up the ghost.
as to how to get basilisk to install system 7- thats the problem im having.
i created a disk image with (os9) diskcopy, - basilisk saw this, cool. set basilisk to open 1st part of the os7.5 system software, fine, opens the installer. Crashes when it gets about half way.
tried getting basilisk to open more than the first part (ie 1+2, 1-19 etc) still crashes in the same place.
tried a few different hd images (downloaded from the net) that have sys.7 installed- basilisk didnt recognise them.
anyone have any tips?
cheers

Same here. I am trying to install System 7.0.1 with BasiliskII and I can't. It doesn't crash or anything, the installer just doesn't find the volume I have created on my HD. And I can't very well install it on the System Disk, now can I?
The ROM is rather easy to find with Google. I used the keywords Mac BIOS ROM. Whazzam! Instant Quadra, performa and 128k ROMS.
The strange thing is BasiliskII won't work for me unless I use the 1MB quadra ROM using a MacIIc with a 030 processor?!?
BasiliskII is dog slow for me as well! Unusably slow in fact.
I have a 384MB iBook 600MHz.
Any advice on installing system 7 or does anyone know a good manual for basiliskii for the Mac?

Yes, that is my fault. I have been lazy in asking Christian to put it up there.

If anyone has any interest in hacking OS X code
(e.g. sound support), give me a call!

Yay! Nigel Pearson is here!!!
What else do you have planned for BasiliskII for OS X...other than hacking in sound support?
Oh...about sound support...some of the late Sierra adventure games (King's Quest 5, 6, 7...Space Quest I VGA Edition etc...) will quit after realizing they can't initialize sounds...and then blame it on Sound Manager. But I have a feeling it's because sound support is not implemented yet...is there a way to get BasiliskII with some preliminary sound support code that would make the game believe that it can play sounds (even though it won't)? Or is it really my Sound Manager (I'll have to check if Sound Manager is installed or not...forgive me if it's my fault. )

Basilisk is running great with OS7.1. Some games don't work, sound doesn't work. But where can I find Abandonware apps like Photoshop 2 or Office 1 or something?

can you host the .vol fle on idisk or something like that? how big is the file?
The disk volume is 10MBs and has OS 7.1 and Photoshop 1. Can't believe how basic and crude they were. If they are abandonware then we should be able to share them out loud. I'll host it at idisk 'arondallarosa' by 10PM UK time.
You need the ROM file for the LCII. Since ROMs can't be shared legally I can't host that.

I think 'abandonware' is just a term that people use to excuse themselves from downloading something commercial that isn't being sold anymore.
But hey...it's not being sold anymore so the company isn't really losing anything. It's actually gaining through free advertisement.

My main priority is getting windowed mode to work quickly, trying the faster (JIT) 68k emulator, and then implementing all the other missing features :-)

I am working on getting it faster. There are two causes:
* Window update speed.
The OS X windowing system is slow. 10.2 is about 40% faster in this aspect (on my PowerBook G4 400), but it is still a problem.
Easiest workaround is to use the full screen mode
*68k emulator speed
Unlike the fast just-in-time-compiling emulator that Apple uses in OS 8 and 9, BasiliskII uses a much simpler one. The other developers are working on a JIT version of this, but it is slow going (and very tedious)
