i'm just wondering, for those who play WC3 on their (new) iMacs:
what video settings, resolution, texture quality, etc. do you guys play with?

i play with everything on low 640x480x16 and medium on text. quality yet it still goes slow in battles.
i only have 128 mb of RAM..could RAM be the problem with this or can the GF2 not handle it?

Yes RAM is a issue. I assume your using OS X and that will eat up that 128 leaving very little for WC3 so you will have lots of pagin.

I have not tried this yet but people are saying it runs much better in OS 9 so you might want to give that a try.

It does run better in OS 9. I use the same iMac at home, and if you don't find it easy to play in X it helps to get more RAM.

no no no no, not classic. IN OS 9.

Classic has overhead to it so it will run better in native 9.

Yep, performance was much worse in OS X - apparently it's getting better though, I haven't tried it with the latest patch yet.

It is unplayable in X. If you boot into OS 9, it will be much, much better.

Yes, this is a sad fact. It's probably due to bad NVIDIA drivers.. I'm hoping with every update of OS X/War3 that it will be playable in OS X..

How do ATi cards play wc3 in X? I'm curious to know what the wc3 performance is like on an iBook.

Under Mac OS X 10.2.2 on an iMac G4/700 512 MB RAM GeForce 2MX I use 1024x768x32 and high quality textures, low quality everything else. I have not noticed much a speed difference in battles between this and the 640x480x16 medium setting you describe. Upgrading to WC 3 1.0.4 will help if you have no done so, but the game is still unplayable in major battles of even 2v2 games.

Back to SCBW for me...

Actually, it runs great on my iBook - 800 MHz, 32 MB Radeon 7500, 640 MB RAM. Better than on my tower, which has a Radeon 8500 but only 420 MB of RAM and a 400 MHz G4. On the tower it's playable in single player but not really multi; on the iBook it rocks.

What settings are you using on the iBook? This is in X right?

I also play Warcraft III on a tibook 667 w/half gig of memory. I put about 20 hours a week multiplayer time in and it does slow down briefly in huge battles, but is definitely playable.

I have all the latest Warcraft III patches installed and the newest Ati Drivers. My video settings are as follows. I am going straight down the line if you were to hit the video button in options

640x480x16
High
Medium

Some of these I probably do not need to turn down, but did it once and all worked well and just decided to leave it. I play side by side to a guy on a pc and it runs pretty much on par. Maybe I am just lucky.

In single player, I can max everything out (since the iBook can only do 1024*768 anyway, it doesn't make all that much of a difference). Strangely enough, Civ III runs worse

Wow. Thats great to hear. Is there a noticable difference in quality between 800*600 and 1024*768 on a 12.1 in screen?

have you turned Quortz AA off? Civ 3 runs pretty good on a 400G3 until end game with it off.

On my 733 G4 I've had the "stock" nVidia 2MX and swapped it with the Radeon 8500 (w/ TV OUT ) Sadly, they both do fine in OS X until a battle. Then it slows to 2-4 frames while your opponent micros and destroys you. OS 9 is good.
