I have OS 10.2 just installed on an eMac. Nothing else added yet, all software updates applied.

I downloaded Quake3 (no errors) and the installation went perfect. I then go to run Quake and it says the "application quit unexpectedly". There are no settings to check since the program won't even run!

I rebooted and reinstalled it again and again, same thing.

How is this easier than on XP again? I switched to Apple last month and am slowly finding that everything is NOT as "rosy" as promised. It seems there is little difference between the amount and types of problems on Apples as there are on WinTel boxes.

Can anyone clue me in on why this is not working? I even redownloaded Quake3 for OSX from another source just to see if maybe that was the cause, the same result occurred however.

HELP!

1. Get original CD
2. Install original game in classic mode.
3. Download latest patch from version tracker.
4. Unstuff the patch.
5. Install Application, pak files etc
6. Run New App.

If you could tell me what version of the exe you have and how you installed it I will be able to give more help.

Cheers Edwin

No, the last post offered a too-complex method. Just do the following:

1) Download the latest OS X offering, Quake III Arena X - 1.3.2, HERE

2) Install.

3) Then copy the pak0.pk3 file from the original CD to the baseq3 folder on your hard drive.

It should run fine after that. And, for those not in the know, you can use the pak0.pk3 file from any version of Quake (so those Quake for Windows versions selling for $5 on eBay are actually useful . . . In fact, I've got one I'll sell for $5, the original Windows version in a sealed "collectors" tin).

If you need more help, just post.

Do that! That has been the problem in the last about five or six cases when I've been helping people get Quake 3 to work. For some reason, some Q3A CDs don't install the pak0.pk3 file, and that file is basically the whole game. Copy it either from your CD or from any CD (Windows, Mac, anything) because they're all the same.

Enjoy.

make 100% sure you have the absolute latest version, it took me a good few hours to find it because id's ftp was pretty badly organised and had an old beta port that didnt work at all on main disply, once i got the right version it worked flawless

No OS or OS manufacturer can strongarm a developer into making everything simple. The whole Apple ease-of-use thing comes from what Apple can control and its hardware. Plus, most developers do know that their stuff won't sell unless they match or exceed what Apple does. Of course, big names like id can kind of do what they want
