i just downloaded and installed the 1.32 update for X (so i didn't have to play in Classic)....now when i try to play an areana it loads through all of its stuff but right at the end it stalls and hangs on "awaiting screen snapshot" or something to that effect.

any ideas?

Maybe check your network settings... I just wish they would update this soon! None of my three mice work very well with this OS X version **Sigh**.

Does it run on X 10.2 on your machines?

Quake III Arena crashes every time I start it up to and including 1.32. I have a new iBook 800 with Radeon Mobility 7500. Jedi Knight's running fine (same engine).

Any suggestions?

WTF! i wanna run around and shoot people! and i don't want to boot into 9 every time i want to do so!

Make sure you have the latest point release:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac/

If you did a complete re-install, did you also remove the .cfg files? It sounds as if that is the problem - they are probably corrupted.

Look in this directory: Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/quake3

There are probably multiple folders here depending on what mods you have played. I would trash everything in this directory as it is essentially a preference to remember your .cfg files. Any folders/files that you trash will be re-created the next time you launch quake3 and/or any mods.

I am not entirely sure, but I believe it will grab the .cfg from your main q3 folder (Applications/quake3/baseq3) and if you do not have one there, it will create a default .cfg file.

This is a good site for quake3 news and help (they have a Mac specific forum which is nice - check out the Mac faq as it can be very helpful):

well, im back to my first problem of stalling at "awaiting snapshot".

it was quiting because i forgot to increase it's memory in 9....once i bumped it up to 256MB it now opens in X....but then stalls.....*sigh*

oddly enough, it'll play the demo against crash fine...it'll load and stuff...

so i dunno....

Hmm, I am somewhat confused now. If you are running the X version of q3, there should be no connection at all to Classic (there is no option under "Get Info" to increase memory allocation for the X version as it is supposed to dynamically address the memory requirement). You are sure that you are launching the X version of q3, right? It should have the actual q3 logo as the icon instead of a generic icon which is the Classic version. The X version of the q3 app will have a version number (1.3.2) whilst the Classic version will state "Classic Application" under the "Kind" info.

If you have trashed all .cfg files in your q3 Application Support folder as I mentioned earlier, then I would go further by removing any .cfg files in you q3 Application folder. You don't necessarily have to trash these - just move them out of the Application/quake3/baseq3 (along with ones in the missionpack or osp, etc) folders.

Finally, I assume that you are getting the "awaiting snapshot" screen while trying to connect to an internet server? Check your data rate setting and try other servers. There is perhaps another issue that may be causing your difficulties which involves the PunkBuster client, but you should at least be able to connect to a server before getting any PunkBuster errors or quits.

Are you sure you are using the OS X version? You don't have memory allocation in OS X version of Q3.

I can email you my q3 app if you want.

Cheers Edwin

Nope, I am sure that I am using the X version. I also have enought memory and a working video card (at least Jedi Knight works).

I have also deleted the prefs and the extra folder in Application Support. But still it does not work. I have downloaded the latest version (1.32 AFAIK).
