What am I doing wrong? The game auto-ends in the year 2050, but until that date I (and the other races) haven't even got into laying proper railroads. I want to fly stealth-jets, throw nukes and use spies. Is there a way to get beyond 2050?

You need to establish contact with other Civs and trade technologies with them. That's the only way to climb the "tech tree" quickly. You should also build roads and harbors to establish trade routes so you can trade resources and luxeries.

You can get more Civ3 strategy tips at Apolyton.net

first third of the game do little more then expand your empire, just throw down citys all over the place and try to keep any holes in your terratory pluged up. This will keep other civs from plopping a city down in the middle of your territory.
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive.

Expand expand expand. Keep building cities like there's no tomorrow. That's the way to get enough science momentum going to get where you want to go.

Also build libraries and put as much money into technology as you can afford to. Try playing as a civ with a Science bonus like Babylon or Greece.

I never played Civ 3, but in my super-addicted days of the original Civilization, I'd develop as much Science as possible and try to win the tech race. Trade is good!

Search the forums, I believe this question has been asked before...

Anyway, it's not that hard. Build lots of cities and build lots of roads. Trade techs whenever you can, and don't be too xenophobic and go to war with everyone.

2050 is the official "end date" of the game. The "last turn", if it were.

Several techniques and suggestions for the game:

1) Industrious civilization (IE, Americans, Germans) tend to expand and develop faster than others (my bias);

2) Expand as quickly as possible. When the game starts, build your first city wherever the computer places you. Don't waste time looking for 'the perfect location';

3) Build a granary first, and then start creating settlers, balanced by another worker;

4) Mine where you can, ASAP. This builds currency and also shields, which helps speed future production capacity;

5) Connect your cities via roads as soon as possible - this helps speed overall growth;

6) Aim your research to develop THE REPUBLIC as soon as possible. By upgrading your government, you decrease corruption, increase growth, and speed development dramatically from the despotism you begin with;

7) "Play nice" with your neighbors for as long as possible in order to avoid wasting money on your military until you have a wide military advantage;

8) Build THE PYRAMIDS as soon as is prudent in order to give each city a GRANARY by default. This speeds growth tremendously;

9) Foremost: EXPAND, EXPAND, EXPAND as fast and furiously as you can!
