from Inside Mac Games' visit to MacPlay:

"Contrary to some reports, MacPlay has decided not to publish the Baldur’s Gate II expansion pack, Throne of Bhaal or the Icewind Dale expansion pack, Heart of Winter. Cottam explains, “We would love to bring both Throne of Bhaal and Heart of Winter to the Macintosh, however, the decision is now driven completely by economics. At one time, the sales results would have been drastically different, but there were other factors which prevented us from moving forward with the conversions. I'm the first to admit that both products have large and loyal followings and deserve to be on the Macintosh, but I'm also convinced that the window of opportunity has now passed."

yeah, i saw this and it was a bit of a bummer.

i wonder how well bg2 sold, does anyone know?

i have a feeling that we are not getting the expansion packs, but if a baldur's gate 3 came along we probably will get it as i suspect we will get icewind dale 2.

does anyone know how many copies need to be sold for a mac game to be a "hit"?

BG2 was a hit on the Mac. That isn't the problem. The article explains what happened. It seems MacPlay has had a lot of problems in the past.

Some industry insiders mentioned that there was some liscensing issues involved with the two expansion packs. Interplay is having issues right now...

free clue: it probably would help your sales ALOT if the ports actually came out within a resonable time frame of the windoze version, eg. 1 mo, and w/o the 10-15$ mac surcharge, and half the software.

It'd also help if the ports weren't so half---ed, and they actually bothered to port good games like wizardry 8, morrowind, etc.

They've brought "good" titles to the mac?! (response to article's closing paragraph.) BG & IWD are mediocre at best. What I see additionally on their site are a bunch of less than good FPSes, i.e. no Halflife, a crap racing game, and a hoard of other offal like that.

Bottomline: I've had it with waiting for mac versions of games any more. A game comes out for windoze that looks good, then thats the platform I buy it for on the day that it comes out.

Why are they spending money developing games that they give away rather than on the ones people would pay them for?

Arrghh!!!!!!!

Sorry, needed to vent. I'm better now.

They suck, BG2 Throne of Bhaal is probably the most awaited port to be done on the mac, main reason being it is the best RPG games yet on any platform, and the people are waiting for the expansion. I can't see how the port would be long/expensive to do as it is the same engine as BG2.

Really disapointing, these people shouldn't be allowed to be in the porting buisness.

Again, apparently the issue is that MacPlay couldn't license the game from Interplay. It's not that they didn't want to or didn't have the resources to port them, but they didn't have permission to port the game.

Not so. In the interview (link in the original post) MacPlay states that due to that they don't use Mumbo Jumbo to port anymore but OmniGroup, it is not economically viable to port Trone of Bhaal or Heart of Winter. They don't mention any licencing issues as far as I can tell.

Burger Bill is the one that mentioned the licensing issues and that Contraband had someone ready to go. I'll take the word of the developers over the story. The stories don't always get everything right. There may have been some things said that were misinterpreted.

How well would BG2 run on a dual gig in VPC?
Can you transfer a saved file from the Mac BG2 to PC Throne of Bhall?

Thanks
