If i install yellow dog linux on my powerbook will I be able to play the linux version of games? It sounds obvious, but I dont know how the different architectures would effect compatibility. Anybody have experience with this?

Sure you can. As long as there is a PPC Linux binary, you should be fine. A few of the games from Loki Games have PPC binaries. I know their port of Alpha Centauri works because I play it occasionally on my PowerBook when booted into Debian. I haven't tried the others games though. See ftp://ftp.lokigames.com/pub/installers/ppc for the PPC installers.

Sorry, should have qualified that statement.
It needs a PPC binary, which most do not have. If it does, or you can compile it yourself, then it will work.

For thrills? Or if you want to do lots of development with opensource stuff, or if you want something with a little less (or more if you go for one of the major distros, I guess) bloat than OS X, yadda yadda.

What's the best version of Linux to run on mac? Yellow Dog? I just installed it and am still working with it. I still have to figure out just how to get it to work with airport though.

Because black box is the greatest window manager ever. Sometimes I like to geek it up in linux just for the hell of it (though I am in OS X most of the time), and also because i am running it on my PC and am more used to Linux then anything else.

Yellow dog seems to be the defacto standard out there for the mac right now.

I kind of figured you would need mac binaries, I guess I was just hoping that it would work so I could play ut2k3

YDL or Debian, depending on your geekiness factor.

I've got an ibook 2001/500 that I installed linux on because OSX was just too dog slow on it, whereas it was usable on the same speed Pismo.

In any event you should be able to get PPC linux version of: Doomlegacy, Quake 1,2, & 3, the exult engine if want to play Ultima7/Serpent Isle, Alephone(Marathon games), etc.

Other non-linux specific games that are good:
Angband & variants
Nethack
Omega
ADOM(if it ever gets re-compiled for ppc)
etc. do some googling

Actually, I prefer fluxbox myself now...
