I am soon will be moving to place, where for first few months probably there will not be broadband access, so I will have to use 56k modem for internet access.

The question is that I am fan of UT online but never tried it playing on modem. Is it possible? What should I do to have good ping?

56K modem, what is that?

I would think it is possible, but I've never tried it. When you have broadband, you never go back. I used to play the original Unreal over modem.

You can get pings any were from 200 - 350, if the server is realtively close to you. If you play against people with around the same ping you will not be able to notice it. However if your playing against some people that all have bardband, with pings of <100 you will not have a good time

Yeah, I had to use 56k dial-up for a long time when cities around me had broadband for months, and I played the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament over 56k for awhile, as well as Half-Life and every other multiplayer game I played, and if you look hard for close servers you'll probably find one that you can get relatively low ping on and the lag will be bareable. Good luck!

Dialup sucks with UT. You're at a distinct disadvantage.

That said, I once had my @ss kicked badly by some kid with a 350 ms ping, when my ping was under 100.

It's hard to have fun with a modem connection anymore. People with low latency connections will mop the floor with you. However, If you don't care about winning, you shouldn't have a problem with playing on a modem connection. Personally, I find playing with anything above a ping of 100 milliseconds unbearable. It's just too laggy to kill effectively. I think you should go to your local library to obtain a find a few good books to read while you're waiting for broadband. Also, consider picking up a good real-time strategy game like Warcraft III. Network performance isn't nearly as important for those types of games.

I play UT on broadband now, mostly Domination, and with lag of about 180-200 on my preferred server I had won many times with most frags and also sometimes with most domination - sometimes they diverge

So 250 is not that bad for me. I was worried that something else, other than lag, which i can live with if its about 200-250, would hamper gameplay on modem..

You could play with a high ping, just hope that it stays consistant. Nothing worse than having your ping jump from 100 to 400.
PS.
I like to play on servers where my ping is less than 100 or close to it.
I found one server where my ping stays below 40, Fragging goodness
