Hello all. I am having trouble with Quake 3 and my sound card. I just bought an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 sound card for my G4 to use with my Logitech z560s (will be z680s tomorrow!) I can't get Quake 3 to work with it, though. every time I launch Quake, it starts initializing, then Unexpectidly Quits. I added the line "seta s_initsound "0"" to by q3vonfig.cfg file to disable sound, and sure enough, Q3 started up just fine, but apon re-enabling sound, it jsut crashes again. i also chose "built-in" as my output in the Sound CP instead of the Revolutioin and Q3 started up fine like that too using my built-in speaker. I ran Q3 from the Terminal to gather it's output and got the error:

macosx_sndcore.m:50: failed assertion `outOutputData->mBuffers[0].mNumberChannels == 2'
Abort

Obviously this is a hint. (I uploadded the whole output here too http://www.mkd.cc/rev71q3.txt) Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

-Morgan

PS. Deleting q3config.cfg doesn't help either...

It may be possible that the current version of Quake III for Mac doesn't yet support the Surround Sound drivers found in the newly released M-Audio 7.1 card. That would be the most probable cause for the conflict: a disagreement between the drivers in the new sound card in which Quake III may not be able to recongnize & output to without an updated patch. Best of luck though!

It's M-Audio's responcibility to make it's drivers compatibe, not Quake's (seening as how Quake has been around for a while and it's widely used). And, Quake is final at 1.32 now.. So there don't be any future versions... Thanks though!

Understood, but "responsibility" doesn't necessarily mean they did it. I still say it's probably a conflict between the sound drivers in Quake III communicating correctly with the new sound card, and it's unsure of how to output the signals its getting, but I hope you find the answer soon!

When Quake3 quits while using the Revolution with analog speakers, Quake3 kicks out an error stating that the number of available audio channels do not equal 2. M-Audio has tried to work around it but there's something in Quake 3's code that will make it automatically quit if the available channels are not equal to 2. That's something id should fix. Other games play nicely with the Revo, including SoF II which shares much of the same Quake 3 Cocoa based code as Q3A (since Omni did most of the work on the original OS X port of Q3A-in fact, Omni apparently has tried to contact id on behalf of M-Audio an has even offered to help out but no word yet). Why should M-Audio cripple their drivers for by faking 2 channels for the sake of one game while other games work just fine?

So, how do you like your Z-680's (when you get them tomorrow)?

I might pick up a pair of them soon.
