No problems here...
10.2.4 on a new iMac and a G4 dual-450.

Of course, non-software modes run like crap (whereas they work great under OS 9) but what can be done? 'Tis an old game these days.
Be happy.

Only thing I can suggest is to make sure you got the correct OS X patch. There was one for the normal one, and one for the expansion. Some people had many crashes when they applied the wrong one. I've been running the OS X version of Diablo II since it was released without any issues. Also played mpq based mods without any issues. Good luck.

Diablo II in OS X has been covered several times in this and many other Mac gaming forums. There are many issues with the hardware accelerated modes in Diablo II in OS X. Some are driver issues, some are issues with the app itself. As someone else mentioned it's best to play in software mode in OS X, and if you have an NVIDIA card and you play in OS 9, use software mode as well. In some cases, even with ATI cards, it's best to use software mode in OS 9 as it offers a more consistent framerate (although it doesn't bench as high). If you want to see your framerates type in:

fps

in the chat window (do the same to turn it off).

And as someone else also said, make sure you're using the correct OS X patch. You're using LoD so the patch you should have should be named something like:
Diablo II LoD OS X patch.sit

Must have been a bad install. Reinstalled and everything is working fine (albeit slow) now.

It depends on the order. The LoD patches should overwrite the Normal D2 patch if you installed the LoD one after the Normal patch.

So let me get this straight. I've got an ATi Radeon 32MB card and I can't use it with D2LOD under OS X?? That's stupid. WTF? Is someone working on this?? Is this a temporary thing? Software rendering is a joke!

Software rendering cranked up doesn't look a whole lot different than OpenGL mode. Most of the time I'm not paying attention to the lighting when I'm playing so I don't mind too much, though I sure do miss the old Glide performance.

Users with 256MB RAM, OSX 10.2, and video hardware of Radeon or GeForce type or better, may notice improvement in the GL rendered mode when the Diablo2 v1.10 patch is released, it has improvements that take specific advantage of these configurations.

However if you have less than 256MB RAM, don't have OSX 10.2, or have an older video card such as Rage128, this new GL code does not engage - software rendering may still be a better bet.

The short story is that to get noticeably improved texture load/unload performance in v1.10 - which is what Diablo2 really needs - we needed more RAM, and a similar set of techniques to what Quartz Extreme uses, which excludes OSX 10.1 and Rage 128 hardware.

Okay. Sounds somewhat promising. Any unofficial ETA on this patch? I'll take whatever caveats you need for a CYA, but can you give us your best guess?

Sorry, can't go into dates. I need to add that the GL changes were but one minor component - there are new things in v1.10 that have been a long while in the making. It is not the case that we just tweaked this one thing in the code and now we're sitting on it.

Even when the day comes that we lock down a build for testing, running through a complete feature test gauntlet (PC & Mac combined plus battle.net multiplayer) is a pretty big deal in terms of manpower and time, because it's such a rich game. Nuff said.

Just a quick question from a mod player. Not sure if you can answer this or not. Are there any plans for direct txt support in the mac version, maybe launched from terminal or a checkbox at startup? Thanks

If the enhancements can boost OpenGL performance improves upon RAVE performance, that'd be great. If it got closer to Glide performance, Mmmmm....

It's just good to know that the OpenGL problem is being worked and hopefully fixed. Too bad I didn't have enough time to keep my b.net characters alive (wc3 takes up my free time).
