Just announced and on the front page of www.maccentral.com, MacSoft will release the UT2K3 Demo for Mac TODAY around 5pm Central Time. The system specs, however, are quite taxing, and it'll be interesting to see how it runs on my 1Ghz G4 w/ 64MB GeForce4.

And don't even bother with www.macgamefiles.com or www.insidemacgames.com, so many people are hitting their servers neither page will hardly load. They certainly underestimated the zeal of Mac Gamers everywhere...if anyone can find a reliable/fast FTP to d/load it off of, let us know!

No problem man, I'm about as giddy as I can be just knowing I'm gonna be playing it tonight! What's your transfer rate?

On my cable modem capable of 500k/sec downloads it's averaging about ~49k/sec...I'm assuming their servers are getting slammed, but hopefully it'll hold that speed at least.

I cancelled and started again on my IMG Pro account, getting 100k right now, instead of the 30k on the ausmac site. Only 21 minutes left!

BTW minimum specs - 700Mhz G4, 256 Mg RAM and a GeForce 2MX with 32Mg VRAM or equivalent.
My PowerBook sure beats that, but I wonder how it'll do...
Edit: 700Mhz G3, not a G4!

I think some bum from my university, the University of Calgary, has set up a mirror for the demo.. because about 5 minutes ago, the internet slowed to a crawl in our office (I am at work). Grrr.. kind of annoying having someone eat up all the bandwidth.

Something like this has happened before though, one weekend, a guy ran a games server.. I could barely ssh into the comp sci computers to submit an assignment. Grr!!

But I am excited about the demo, dling at 1.5 kb per sec. Yay!! It's so fast

edit : oh and hey? perhaps someone here with the demo could set up a bit torrent download for it, and post it here.. that way, we would really be helping each other out

Ooh, yes, a torrent of the demo would be wonderful! Fast speeds for all.

At the rate I'm downloading, it'll be another 6 hours...

Wow -- just got done playing a quick game of capture the flag. I must say, this game rocks! I have a G4 1 GHz with 768 MB RAM, quit all applications before playing. No slow down at all, all FPS had to be above 30 even in the worst battle with 15 players in viewing area.

+5 points for using bundles
-20 points for hard locking after 7 seconds of play on a dual 800 with GeForce 2 MX and forcing me to hard reboot my Mac

Total for this game at the moment: -15 points!

Trying the game again like the dumbass that I am.

I guess Epic was tired of hearing me whine and bitch and decided to code in some kind of way to detect what computer I was on and give me the worst experience ever.

Only a few games have ever managed to kernel panic my Mac or hard lock it. The notable one is Racer...but UT2k3 takes the prize. 4 hard locks in the last 15 minutes.

Thanks, Epic, for a swell job porting UT2k3!

Maybe if you gave some information on your system specs we could try to help you out? Bashing a compny doesn't help anyone. Contructive criticism does.

Anyone got any other mirrors? I can't get a connection to any of the 3 mirrors on macgaefiles.com.

Oh and does this play in OS 9?

Edit: Oh, guess not. But will the final be OS X/9?

OS X only as far as I know. Especially considering all the OpenGL updates that were needed to get it to run properly, I don't think there's an OS 9 version planned.

And I also can't connect to any of the mirrors. Oh well -- maybe later tonight. Camino unexpectedly quit on me when I had it going the first time. Yay.

I gave my system specs. Dual 800, GeForce 2 MX. And here's what I didn't give 620MB RAM. Need any other info? 10.2.6, btw.

The game seems to work in windowed mode at the moment...which is fine for now I guess.

Game seem to randomly lock up when some form of OpenGL is involved. 3 of the 4 times the game locked up just choosing between the 2 DM demo levels.

Sound loop...incapable of force quitting.

I've got a PowerBook 1Ghz and it plays brilliantly, no crashes either! I usually get around 30fps no matter what I set the graphics too. I also edited the 'unreal.ini' file to play full screen (1280 x 854)
With bots set to 11 it's quite smooth, there are 5 maps, not 4 as stated on some websites, there's a second capture the flag map, really futuristic and very pretty!
I also get added details like grass, extra flags, glows on powerups and other great stuff that wasn't apparant on the PC with a GeForce 4MX.
Interestingly I set the processor to 667 and tried it out, it's very slow and unplayable with 6 or more bots! 1Ghz looks like a minimum with bots playing.

Well, Guy Incognito, how does it run so far at least, besides the crashing? I've got a dualie 800/GF3/768MB, so I'm curious to at least similar performance. Too bad it's not MP aware.

It is X only because of the newer drivers/OpenGL. Anyways, how do I check my framerate? I am guessing I average 14fps .
BTW, anyone try it on the 12" AlBook?

Well...the performance in windowed mode is pretty amazing so far. Fairly smooth for a GeForce 2 MX. I've set the graphics option for a fairly average graphics quality. I'm sure the higher quality graphics will make the GeForce 2 choke but I'll give it a try and post some FPS later tonight.

I wanna try fullscreen but I'm a bit scared. These hard locks make reboot times shoot through the roof. It's painful to sit in front of a rebooting OS X doing fscks.

Have you tried installing EscapePod to see if that can help you get out of the hard freeze?

Also I just saw this posted by James Robrahn at the IMG forums for anyone wanting to submit bugs:
"If you have any issues with the Unreal Tournament 2003 Tech Beta Demo, please email your bug reports to ut@macsoftgames.com.

I will try to read the forums for bug reports, but for quicker contact email us at ut@macsoftgames.com

Please include, Model of Macintosh you are using, Ram installed, Video card and the bug report.

If you have any OSX crash logs or UT2K3 logs, please attach those to the email.

Thanks.

Just in case escapepod didn't help you any Guy.

Okay this is severly starting to piss me off. 3rd time i download the file, and it still won't mount! Has anyone had the same problem? This is the first time i have this problem, disk copy pops up, then just quits. I tried mounting other files and it works just fine, as usual.

Edit: I tired openeing Disk Copy, then mounting it from there and it's giving me : Unable to load the disk image driver. Permission denied (-536870208)

??

Well...now it works in fullscreen. Weird. I'll be playing it more this weekend when I have time and send in the bug/crash reports if they ever surface.

OT: bundle...very OS X-ish...uses App Support. I waswrong to doubt Epic's ability to make this game as Mac-like as possible.
