I got ut2k3 to work much better on a Geforce4Ti finally, by just unplugging all uneeded USB stuff. But something happened and now after about 4 or 5 minutes of play UT2k3 jams, can't force quit and if I try to ssh to the computer to shut it down I get a kernel panic.... This has now happened 4 different times in 1 day Anyone have any clue what could've happened to the game?

Oooh, not good...escp. since you mention "USB" devices since they were an issue in 10.2.5. First off, have you updated to 10.2.6? Also, your computer may actually be searching for those USB-devices, such as if you've got it setup to auto-sense those devices when the computer reboots, and if they're not there, it could panic. Try disabling anything that typically automatically starts during bootup dealing w/ your USB devices.

yes, I updated to 10.2.6 before I got UT2k3 demo. But the two USB devices were just an EyeTV set and a logitech joystick, nothing ever boots at startup for those. I have absolutely nothing booted except classic on startup. When I say unplug the USB stuff, I meant before I booted ut2k3 not during the game or anything like that. But now the computer decided to not kernel panic (once out of 5 times) when I just issued the reboot command through SSH. What I think is happening is when I forcequit ut2k3 the mouse appears but the screen never changes to the finder, just a frozen image of the game. Maybe this is because the resolution never changes?? I'll try changes ut2k3 resolution this time

I was having some kernel Panic issues with my eyetv recently, while running 10.2.3. Since upgrading to 10.2.6 I have not been having the problems. Here are some emails from El Gato support about it though:

Thank you for contacting El Gato Customer Support.

I'm sorry to hear about your Kernel Panics.
They might be due to an upgrade to 10.2.5
I'll make the assumption that you're using that
version, since other users of 10.2.5 have reported
USB-spawned kernel panics.

This issue has been covered in some depth at
various Macintosh troubleshooting sites, like:

http://www.macintouch.com
http://www.macfixit.com

Please note these two lines from the info you sent:

com.apple.driver.AppleUSBHub(1.9.5)@0x22fdf000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(1.9.5)@0x22c1d000

the IOUSBFamily.kext file might be causing
the problems. You can downgrade to the last version
at this website:

http://developer.apple.com/hardware/usb/usbloggers.htm

One thing I noted is that version 1.9.5 is associated
with Mac OS 10.2.3. If you're using that version of the
OS, then you might be having similar problems as
10.2.5 users are.

If you're using 10.2.5, but still have the 1.9.5 version
of the IOUSBFamily.kext, there might be a mismatch in
what was installed.

Regardless, the problem is most likely with your USB
files, and my advice is to check with Apple by sending
them your kernel panic logs. Otherwise, you can
experiment by removing your USB hubs or other USB devices,
to see if there is any difference. Finally, you can
check these discussions to see if a solution is there:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/
(Do a search for "IOUSBFamily.kext" or kernel panics)

http://search.macintouch.com/
(Do a search under the Macintouch Reports
for "IOUSBFamily.kext" or kernel panics)

http://www.macintouch.com/mosxreader10.2pt60.html
(read this for lots of helpful info and background)

Please let me know if you find a solution to your
problem.

If you're not using EyeTV 10.2.5, then USB
problems with the OS are less probable, but
by no means impossible. I have seen reports
that the file I told you about may be involved
in problems no matter what version of 10.2.x.

I advise that you check with Apple - they are
the first people that should be told of kernel
panics.

EyeTV doesn't mess with the kernel directly,
so it's very unlikely that it's causing the
panics. That said, the only way to tell for
certain is to have Apple check it out.

You can also downgrade to EyeTV 1.1.2 and
see if it makes any difference.

10.2.5 is working fine on our systems - it
might make things better for you.

So Weezer your saying EyeTV can cause kernel panics even when it is un plugged at all times, at startup as well? If this is true then thank you for all those links about USB problems in OS X, I will check them out.

no, I didn't read your first post close enough. I saw eyetv and kernel panics, and thought the links might be helpful. I've never had a panic when I wasn't actually using the device, especially if it's unplugged. Sorry for the confusion.

oh, it's ok weezer. I fixed the kernel panics by just deleting the "System" folder in "~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo/" and didn't use my custom widescreen resolution again. Because the jamming came back when I set it to 1600x1024 again.
