Had plain jane D2 on the mac with the OS X patch installed, played fine. bought the expansion and I have an error every time I try to load it about 2/3's through. The disk also will not create an image via disk copy.
I did remove the game and start from scratch, no good thier either.
anyone have any suggestions?

I was gonna suggest cleaning it .
Anyway, my LoD disc, after being in CD piles for years, will no longer install, though it plays just fine. The same happened with my original D2 Install Disk. I think Blizzard skimped on their CD quality here .
Still the best multiplayer RPGs on the market, though, IMO.

I could never get my Diablo 2 discs to mount as a disk image that worked. A friend told me it has to do with some very clever copy protection that Blizzard put into the CDs.
Anyway, LOD works on my iMac, but very slowly. I hear there will be a new version (1.10, I think) that should speed things up. Maybe it'll solve your problem too?

From what I've read at Diabloii.net looks like it will be out before June 12th. Can't wait. The uniques and ladder chars look interesting.

I've been following this patch for, oh, a year and a half now... I never IMAGINED back in December '01 I'd still be waiting for patch 1.10 as of June '03. It's silly, but the patch should be worth it. Check out diabloii.net's 1.10 page if you haven't yet.
Dr. Carl - it would frankly be pretty incredible if a software patch fixed physical deformities in my discs! (did you read the post before quoting it?)

Ya, I read your post.
From what I understand (and I have very limited knowledge on this), Blizzard has intentionally written (and not written) data to their discs in a way that you can not burn a workable pirated CD from a disc image. New hardware or an updated OS could have a problem reading from the D2 discs (Has this happened?). While a software patch may not fix these intentional "deformities", an included software installer may allow you to install D2 correctly.

If they tried to copy-protect it such that one cannot make CD-R duplicates that work, I have to say they've failed. I currently have 2 working duplicates of my LoD disc I use to play on my two other D2-capable Macs (installed with friends' CD keys so we can use Bnet). I can't get the Windows portion of the original disc to copy, though .
Anyway, I doubt some intentional error originating with Blizzard is the problem. I just take shitty care of my CD's (one reason I always make CD-R backups).

I had to have my LOD CD replaced. The CD went "bad" and refused to be read in any CDROM drive.

Now that is very interesting...
I have a friend in the PC world who enjoys 'making backups' of software (and DVDs). He tried for at least 3 weeks to make duplicate discs of D2. He checked with various forums and found out that others (in the PC world) could not make a useable backup as well. He gave up trying and has great respect for Blizzard. This guy is very persistant and gets his jollies on troubleshooting (guess that's why he prefers PCs) and it is very rare to see him quit. Guess it's possible that the copy protection only applies to PCs.
When I was playing D2 on my iMac 333 with OS 9, I tried to use a disk image on my hard drive of the 'Play' disc. D2 insisted that I insert a physical disc in the drive in order to play. That was a bummer because my CD-ROM drive made a very loud vibration whenever a disc was in it (Couldn't hear the monsters scream as I chopped them to bits as well as I wanted to).
Have you been able to play D2 without a play disc (origional or duplicate) in the drive? If so, what machine and OS were you on?

The mac version doesn't look for any copyprotection scheme. Instead, it looks for the volume in a particular manner. The OS 9 and OS X version handle things differently. The OS X version you should be able to use a .img or a .dmg version of the play disk. In OS 9, you have to try a different disk image format as .imgs (via Disk Copy) won't work for use as a play disk. You can try Toast disk images.
drcarl, are you worried about DII performance on your 800 iMac or your 333 iMac? If you play in software rendering mode you should be able to run DII fairly well on your 800 iMac. I don't think any update will be able to speed up your 333 iMac performance.

I'm using my iMac 800 booted into OS X (10.26). D2 works OK at 640x480 with software rendering. On Battlenet, it is a great advantage to be in 800x600 mode, however; increasing the resolution slows down the game.
I suspect that if I boot into OS 9, I might gain some performance in D2... but I leave my iMac on 24-7 in OS X. I really don't want to reboot just so I can play D2 a little bit faster.
D2 on my iMac 333 at 640x480 resolution worked fairly well, even with hardware rendering. When I upgraded to LOD and upped the res, I had to switch to software rendering.
Looking forward to version 1.10 and very excited about World of Warcraft!

If you copy all the files from the play disc/LoD disc to your D2 files folder, you can just eject the CD once the game starts up (IIRC -- haven't done it in a while).

With LoD installed you only need to copy over Diablo II Expansion Movies and Diablo II Expansion Music.

Aren't those the only non-installer-related files on the LoD disc?

What I've noticed is using the software video mode instead of OpenGL dramatically helped system performace while playing the game. Oddly, it says OpenGL is recommended for faster Macs. Considering my iMac isn't very old, it's surprising that this mode performed worse
So I give up thousands/millions of colours, perspective mode, and some special effects in order to play LOD without any choppiness in 800x600 resolution and 256 colours.
Would I fair any better with a 1Ghz G4 and Raedon 9000, or is the game just much choppier on Macs? Is a Geforce 2 MX an adequate card for this game?

Some where on the topics page there should be a thread that talks about D2 performance. That should answer your questions.
