I was finally able install and run WarCraft III when my sister got a used 600 MHz iBook (apparently my system isn't enough for it... installs only to instantly give me an OpenGL error when I attempt to launch), but to my dismay, will not connect to battle.net to play an online game. I know it connected to something at least once because it automatically downloaded an update. WarCraft reports 1.05 as it's version. Anywho, the error is as follows...

Unable to connect to battle.net.

You may be trying to connect to an invalid Battle.net server. If you are using a modem, you may need to manually connect to the Internet before connecting to Battle.net.

I'm on a cable modem so I'm obviously always connected. I have searched a bit on Google and Blizzard's online support, but can't find anything that will help me. I've tried different networks (AirPort and Ethernet), setting her computer as the DMZ on my D-Link router, deleting the battle.net and Warcraft III preferences, and every battle.net gateway. I've installed StarCraft: Brood War and was able to connect just fine. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance for your help...

Have you tried a different battle.net server, east and west?

Are you running any sort of firewall? Have you tried deleting all your WC3 preference files?

Have you tried reinstalling?
Be happy.

I'm not running a hardware or software firewall. I trashed 2 or 3 preference files, should there be more? I haven't tried reinstalling since I just installed it so recently, but you never know, I've seen stranger things happen. I've just been racking my brain trying to figure out if something is missing or where it's tripping up. At least I'm positive now that the WarCraft application is the issue since battle.net (and my netwotk setup) works with StarCraft. I sure people have been successful and this isn't a widespread problem with just macs. What is everyone's setup (computer, isp, version, etc)? Thanks for the responses...

I'm not accusing you of anything here, but just to be sure, you are using a legal copy of WC3, right? Just covering the bases.

are you on some specific type of network or something?

for example if you just have cable or DSL, it should work ok.

my schools server blocked gaming for a while, so i couldnt connect. if the server you are a part of has gaming's priority low, then you wont be able to connect...

To be quite honest, I don't have the original disc :-) A co-worker game me a copy, but I do own StarCraft. I would buy it if I could get it to even run on my PowerBook G3. Perhaps the copy was incomplete or I need to reinstall it on my sister's iBook. My ISP is Comcast (cable).

Yeah, I would try to reinstall. And also make sure that the CD Key is valid (the one that came with that particular copy). And if you and your co-worker are using the same key, make sure you aren't on Battle.net at the same time, or that key will be banned.

I dont think your "not quite legal" copy is the fault as you get a different error message such as: that copy of Warcraft is in use by 'Jo Blow" (or whatever name). And before you accuse me I only know this because if you dissconnect and then log straight back on again quickly enough it gives you that message with your own name.

I get that same message you report when:

- My connection has dropped (i.e. not coonected)
- When trying to access through my College Network (they must block it)
- occasionaly just get it for no apparent reason but after trying again (or a few times) it works again.

The weird thing is that you must have logged into bnet at least once because it auto downloaded the 1.5 patch....so maybe something new in the patch doesnt like your copied version?

"not quite legal" - I like that :-)

I remember having to wait a few seconds before logging back in after being disconnected from a StarCraft game.

My problem keeps sounding more and more like a bad copy of the game, but wouldn't the installer warn me of something like that? And I will be careful with CD-keys and battle.net, I know how that works. ;-) Like I said, if I could get the game to load without giving me an OpenGL error on my Lombard, I'd buy the game and get my own CD-key. But until that happens, I at least want to decimate my friends online on my sister's iBook.

I would suggest sending an e-mail to Blizzard tech support. They are usually pretty quick about getting back to you. support@blizzard.com

I have since purchased the full version of the software, and works flawlessly (although slightly jittery) on my Cube.
